Usually when I convert .avi files to dvd format..after the conversion I'm left with vob and ifo files after which I use something like Nero to burn the DVD.

I converted an avi with Cucusoft and it created an mpg, an m2v and an mpa...(I'm guessing the m2v and mpa are the audio and video in separte files).

I seem to remember another app..(TEMPGenc I think??)..doing the same thing, but it had a DVD author that burned the files onto a DVD in the vob/ifo format.

Don't most converter's go straight from .avi to .vob/ifo, etc.???

No, some do and some don't. TMPGEnc, MainConcept, Procoder, Cucosoft are a few that create an mpg file which is then authored. It was very confusing at first. As I understand it, vob, ifo etc. are authored mpg.

Right...okay...I thought I was doing something wrong.

It seems kinda crazy to say you're converting from .avi to DVD when there are no voi/ifo, etc. files being created.

At least with TEMPGenc it came with a built-in authoring tool. I don't see anything in Cucusoft to do that. I've downloaded a bunch of video programs in the last 2 weeks...I'm sure one of them will convert it...(yet again!)

    Any suggestions on an app??

I am not even aware of any built in authoring program in TMPGEnc. I thought that was what TMPGEnc DVD Author was for. I am not aware of any encoder having a built in authoring program save for VSO ConvertXtoDVD (very good and well thought of at AD):http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/vso_convertxtodvd_guide.cfm WinAvi, Nero, etc. I personally use MainConcept to encode and then Ulead Moviefactory to author and therein was the source of my confusion. This takes an mpg, authors it and burns it to DVD. I never even saw a vob and wasn't sure what it was, at first.

Actually you're right...with TMPGEnc it wasn't built in. It was 2 separate programs that were bundled together, TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 did the converting...and TMPGEnc DVD author made the DVD files.

I'll probably try to use that, but I'm wondering what I did the last time I used Cucusoft. I know I didn't use TMPGEnc to make the DVD...I must have used something else.

    Anyway...*smile*...thanks for the responses...

I may be wrong about Cucosoft. It's been a couple of years since I tried it. I thought it created a mpg but, maybe, it's actually a 1 step program.

No...you're right. Cucusoft created an mpg...that's what I just used. But I didn't remember needing another program to create the DVD files (Vob, Ifo, etc.)

I remembered having to do that with TMPGEnc, but I knew I had the other TMPGEnc program that came with it. I don't remember having to process the file twice with Cucusoft.

With WinAvi, AVI to DVD, or AVI2DVD it's a one step process. AVI file goes in...multiple DVD files come out ready to burn to a DVD.

Why don't you use a simple way to burn a DVD disc? For rg. use winavi, after convert avi to dvd, then select VIDEO_TS folder which it give you for burning. That's easy.

lisa_8023 - I like WinAVI...it seems really cool and easy - BUT - it wouldn't work for me. Every time I created DVD files from a good AVI, the final product would have glitches in it.

I think perhaps the problem all along might have been Nero. I have an old DVD writer (about 2 years old) and it maxes out at 4X recording speed. Nero wouldn't give me the option of recording at 2X...it went right to the maximum. I found a program called ConvertXtoDVD (by VSO) and it allowed me to bump the speed down to 2X. Afterward I created some good DVDs that played all the way through (instead of having glitchy audio and freezing up all the time).

NOW...I must tell you that the problems that were resolved by going to 2X weren't glitches in the audio/video...they were freeze-ups. I created some MPGs with Cusoft and the DVDs would just freeze and sit there for anywhere from a few seconds to 1/2 minute or more. After changing to 2X they came out beautifully.

I'm now left wondering whether some of the failed versions (I've used no less than 10 new software packages the last few weeks from AVI2DVD, to WinAVI, to TMPGEnc, and on and on.

With ConvertXtoDVD, I put a blank DVD in the drive...starting converting the AVI to DVD files and went to bed. When I woke up I had the first fully 100% working DVD that was compatible with my home system.

I have a ton I'd like to say but this is already way too long..*grin*

    Thanks for the response...

I just got avi2dvd and I am trying to convert a slideshow to DVD and I got it to convert once. However, the sound stopped playing after the fourth slide. I did the show with Windows Movie Maker. I tried to convert it again with avi2dvd and I can't pull up an audio stream now. Can anyone help me?
