I appologize first off if I posted this in the wrong forum, please help direct me to the correct forum without getting mad please.

I have been using Xilisoft Video Converter 3 to convert AVI to ipod/iphone. However, 8 out 10 of my conversions end up being out of sync. The audio tends to be ahead or behind about 1 to 2 seconds. Is there a fix for this or maybe a better avi to ipod/iphone converter? I like to cue up a lot of files to convert overnight while I am sleeping. If there is another converter can it have a feature to encode a lot of files at once.

Thanks for the response. I do use Avidemux for some movies and it is great. unfortunately, it will only let you encode one show at at time it will not let you queue up multiple projects for over night encoding. Xilisoft is hit and miss sometimes I can encode 12 or more episodes overnight without a sync problem them sometimes I have sync problems. is there anoter AVI to iphone/ipod converter that will do what I want? I can't find a forum for encoding to mpeg. thanks.

That's what the Job List does.

I am sorry I should have been more detailed. When I tried your "step 3 SAVE" it automatically starts encoding once I hit save and name it with .mp4. How do I "save the output to a job list and run a batch" without it encoding automatically? I checked the help tab but, it does not have the answer I am looking for.

On a different note when I found Avidemux a while back ago I had also found a guide to get better results for picture and audio. I used these settings and it seems to look good on my ipod. I don't remember the author's name but this is what he says to use for conversion settings:
maybe you will find this helpful I did.
    Known working resolutions are:
    368x208 (widescreen)
    320x240 (normal screen)

These are the steps and settings I used:
    1. Open the video file - I started with an MPEG-4 movie of Snow White in 4:3 aspect ratio.
    Settings:
    Sample Rate: 48000Hz
    Bits per sample: 16
    Bitrate: 1536 kb/s
    Resolution: 512x384
    Frame rate: 23,976
    Duration: 1:23
    File size: 569,506 KB

    2. Select Auto | iPod (MPEG)
    3. Select Target Type: IPOD 320x240
    4. Set Video to MPEG-4 ASP (lavc)
    5. Click Video Configure
    6. Set Encoding Mode to Single pass - bitrate
    7. Bitrate to 768

    8. Click Video Filters
    9. Confirm MPlayer resize is targeting 320x240
    10. Set Resample fps to 29,970
    11. Set Audio to AAC (FAAC)
    12. Click Audio Configure
    13. Set Bitrate to 64

    14. Click Audio Filters
    15. Set Resampling to 24000
    16. Select File | Save | Save video
    17. Name the file *note - you must append the file extension .mp4 manually
    18. Click Save

Hmm I am not sure if I am missing a step.

    I launch Avidemux
I drag the avi file onto Avidemux (just one file at a time I am not sure if I should drag a bunch at one time or not)
Once it loads the avi I set it to ipod and enter my ipod settings. I did not click save at this point. otherwise it would start converting.
I then clicked Add to job list, a box opens up and it tells me to enter a "job name" I enter a name of the job name (without .mp4 at the end). Then it says "Output file" I clicked "Browse" option. It opnes a new window and at the top it says "Select video to write" then under it wants me to enter the "name". At the bottom it says open or close.
I wasn't sure what to do here. I used the options on the left to open the folder for the original avi file I want to convert. after I click open the screen goes away and I am back to the box that opened asking me to pick a job name and output file. It then shows me what I picked for the job name and in Output it shows the path to the avi I picked.
I clicked show job list to verify that a list was created and it shows the job name with.js and start time 0:00:00 and finish 0:00:00.
I repeated the process again and checked the Show job list and saw my second job.
I then clicked Run all jobs and it started Rebuilding Frames. When it was done it showed me the job list and it said OK or Cancel. I picked OK but it did not do anything It just shows me the main Avidemux interface.
can you give me step by step instructions on how to use the JOb List opiton. Sorry,if I am bugging you I'll understand. I have done my research to find out how to do this but I can't get anywhere.

Give the job a name (how you want it shown on the list).
Browse to the folder that you will be saving the output files from the Joblist;give the file a name (with .mp4) then hit 'Enter'.
The file should now be on the list.

On the main menu, click 'File' > 'Open' and choose the next file to be placed on the list.

When ready to run the list, click 'File' > 'Show Joblist' and either highlight one job and run it or run all the jobs.

All right!!! It worked. thank you so much again for all your help. One more quick question. What does the "priority" feature do? it is default to below normal.

I would like to thank you for teaching me how to use Avidemux. Everything is working out fine and when I wake up in the morning I see about 5 or 6 movies ready to transfer to my ipod. HOWEVER, haha you knew there had to be another question. I have transferred the mp4 files to my ipod and they work great unfortunately, when I transferred the mp4 movies to my 3G iphone I get a message that says "This movie format is not supported" I don't understand why it would not let me watch the movie on my 3g iphone but will let me watch the exact movie on my ipod. Do you have any ideas?

It must need different settings;since there is no preset, you might try these on a small clip to see if it works.
Failing that, here is a program that's supposed to handle this conversion.

I tried your suggestion but now I get a message from Itunes saying that it can not transfer the file because the iphone does not support the format. I am still confused because again it works with my regular ipod but, not on the iphone. I went to this link http://avidemux.org/admForum/viewtopic.php?pid=30721 and at the bottom of page one you will see the following message. I tried it and it still did not work. Maybe you can make sense out of it and might have another suggestion.

Sorry for jumping in this late.
Apple's iPod & iPhone suck when it comes to playing x264 even though they "invented" the format (same for AppleTV btw).
    * Please make sure NOT to use any high-profile options.
    * When switching in the auto mode to x264 the quantizer switches to "Constant Rate Factor" 26. Apple suggest to switch to 30 for iPod/iphone.
    * When switching in the auto mode to x264 the CABAC options switches to ON. Ipod's and iphone's can't handle CABAC. => Switch it off.
    * Apple suggest to use partition decision to 4 (Always QPel) instead of 6, which avidemux defaults to for x264 (don't ask me why).
    * You might like to switch to "Two pass Avg. bitrate" (instead of CRF) making sure that the bitrate never exceeds 2500 kbps.

I think the CABAC setting might be the first to try.

There are two more posts after that one and based on what they say, these might be the settings.
After you choose the preset for iPod, click the 'Configure' button on the left.
I can't test any of these settings.
    Good luck.

I gave up on Avidemux. I guess it just doesn't work with the iphone 3g. ON the upside Xvid4PSP does work!!!!
I am not sure if it was you who told me about xvid4psp in another forum but, it works good. The only question I have with that one is the Codec Presets. What do they mean, I am using codec preset 1-pass ultra. I noticed a lot of other options like 2-pass ultra 2pass extreme They go from 1 pass all the way to 3 pass(something like that). thanks if you have any info.
