I got some movies off Shareza, decoded then decompressed from AVI to MPEG. they play on DVD player when ripped onto CD-R (which of course has limited space) but not DVD. I have verbatim brand. new player plays + and -. should I convert into another format? is the "region code" screwing it up?? Question #2: if worse comes to worse how do I hook my laptop up to the DVD player. I have the red/yellow/white thing. sometimes I get sound but NO picture on the TV. any help appreciated.
Sounds like you converted from AVI to VCD or SVCD, which is the CD format for video. Unless you have a player that plays Divx on CD. I have one. Divx would put an entire video on CD though. So, you want to convert to DVD. Depending on the type of AVI it shouldn't be too difficult. A lot of AVI is Divx and DivxToDVD is a good conversion app. Nerovision in the Nero suite is another good conversion tool. Once in the DVD format (mpeg2), it should burn to DVD. If a region code problem, it wouldn't play at all. It takes a special card to transmit video from a PC to a TV.
no I'm pretty sure I converted to mpeg2 and this did not play on either my or my father's player. I'm not sure what region code means. I dont know what country (s) it came from but the US is all one region code isnt it??
Video CD is MPEG2 as well. You have to convert to the DVD format to play as DVD. What program did you use to convert and burn, you said part would record to CD. If it played, it's not a region code problem. Yes, the US is region 1. A region 2 disc will not play on a region 1 player. Google DVD region codes and you'll see where the regions are for the world. If you suspect a region code issue, then download and run AnyDVD while trying to do the conversion and backup. not sure. I think it was a trial version of some kind of "ripper." these days I have magic DVD ripper. I'm also running out of space on my little laptop C drive. I'm spending more than I would to just buy or rent the dang DVDs. lol thanx for your help
I wonder if Magic Ripper may not be the problem. It says it converts from DVD to SVCD and Divx. I didn't notice it converting from those formats to DVD. Would the original download have already been in DVD format? In that case all you would have needed to do was burn to disc. If larger than the media, a freeware transcoder like Shrink works. Also, I noticed the Ripper doesn't burn. Decrypter does a decent job there when the file is in ISO, which Shrink can create. Looks like your problem is just a matter of getting into the right format, which entails using the right software. BTW, if any of the downloads happen to be off torrent setups (Shareza is) you may be courting costs much higher than rental and purchases of DVDs. The ISPs and Big Brother are watching many bittorrent P2P download sites.
I always thought AVI was pretty compressed. The movie was about 2 or 300 megs in AVI and the video alone was about 3.5 gigs when converted to mpeg. when I try to burn audio after video (or vice versa) it says the disk (single layer but come on-4.7 gigs!) is full. thanks again
Some downloads come as MPEG2 and others in the more compressed AVI format. As a point of interest, 4.7GB discs are only capable of holding 4.377GB of data. The DivxToDVD app is a good conversion tool for AVI files as is the Nerovision in the Nero recording suite. Once converted, the files may need to be transcoded to fit to DVD5.
