avi to vcd on a dvd?

I made a dvd-rom iso with Nero of a number of Sienfeld .avi files. My standalone dvd player seems to be recognizing the disk as a vcd and plays the episodes.

I didn't do any converting of the avi files to dvd, just burnt them as data.

Why is this possible? and how do I repeat this, no other dvd-roms of avi files seem to play on my dvd player

1st post, sorry if I'm being dense.

Listen the best way and easiest way to turn your AVI files to DVD format is to use a program called NEO DVD. Not Nero. This software is so easy, it is made by Mediostream. Have fun.
