My dvd burner in the pc can only do DVD+r, but my external dvd burner can do both +r and -r. what i want to know is if i can back up my movie that is an original dvd to a DVD+R and then if i had to, back up the DVD+R onto a DVD-R using a dvd duplicator? Or will the DVD burner in the PC not make a difference because it is only reading and the external that can do the DVD-r is doing the writing?

    Thanks

Shouldn't be a problem. It's just like backing up the original dvd except you don't have to worry about removing the protection from the original dvd.

Best to back up origional to dvd-r and then us the dvd-r as the master in the duplicator. Changing from + to - for a duplicator maybe problematic and cause hiccups

The main thing with dvd backups is compatability. Some drives can have problems with certain formats. This includes dvd+-rw/dvd-rom drives, standalone players/recorders,and game consoles.
Original dvds have the dvd-rom format. Plus and Dash are different, just like their counterparts in the RW and RDL media. Lots of different formats and some drives may not recognize certain backups and even certain manufacturers of blank media (blank discs). This will present a No disc type of error when the backup is inserted into any drive and is not recognized. The backup disc should play in at least 1 drive. These messages from the drives that won't recognize backups will be displayed like:

    Wrong format
    Illegal disc
    Wrong region
    No Disc
    Dirty disc.

If your pc dvd-rw drive has plus format write capability only, then it's a pretty old drive. It should be able to read both plus or dash format, but that's no guarantee. Older drives + newer 16x media = Firmware issues. A firmware update may be needed. Some drives may be great burners but not so great readers.

There's also some crap drives out there with low compatability backups. Not all dvd-rw drives are alike. There's some great drive, mediocre drives, and crap drives.

Here's what I'd do if I encountered any different dvd-rw drives:

    1) Get a batch of verbatim DVDR media,1 pk in the plus and 1 pk in the Dash formats.Quality media will prevent a lot of issues now and later.

    2) Burn 4x-8x a couple from both the internal and external dvd-rw drives. Label the discs with sharpies with what burner was used.

    3) Play those backups in all your dvd-rw drives, stand alone players, and game consoles. Those drives will tell you which format they like.

    4) Use the burner who's backups play on majority of your drives to do the burning and the opposite burner to do the reading/ripping.

Thanks guys, i talked to the guys at Best buy and circut city and they both said there shouldnt be a problem. But they are alll just kids working there and im not to confident talk tech with them.

Most of my back ups are +r and i hope i can just copy the data from the + media to the - media.

any more info will be great.

Data? If those backups are dvd movies already sized and encryption removed, ImgBurn would be one of the best routes to go. It's free and takes less than 5 mins to rip to harddrive in Read mode. Then go to write mode and burn away.

You could also do On the Fly but it's a lot riskier. Use the reader drive to read and set blank in burning drive, use copy disc feature of Nero/Sonic/Roxio/etc and rip and burn away at the same time.

The associates at all those Brick and Mortar stores don't know squat.
99% of them probably never burned a dvd.

There's a guy at my local staple's who swears Staple's brand is the best Dvd media that they have, LMAO!!!!!! They're some of the worst.

What's the brand name, model # and current firmware version of both your dvd-rw drives?

    Here's a free program that'll tell you:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm

Some drives have bitsetting capability to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom. Booktyped backups yield the highest compatability rate. Not all drives have this capability.Booktyped backups fools drives into thinking they are playing the original dvd-rom format discs. A little trickeration in the battle of the formats.

The answer to my question will help on finding out if your drives have bitsetting capability. If they do,plus format would be the route. If not, dash format would be your route.

    1) Get quality media
    2) Burn half the rated speed of your blank media-not max speed
    3) Keep harddrive/s defragged regularly.
    4) No multitasking during the dvd backup process.
    5) No paper/sticker labels.
    6) Don't burn the very outer edge of disc-keep backup target to 4360-4370 mbs with quality media. Crap media, keep backup target below 4300 mbs.

Go by that guide and you'll have a lot less errors now and later on down the road.

after it has already be decrypted onto a dvd+r can the movie be backed up from the +r onto a -r ? I have been using +r for some time now and am swtching to -r. Most of my current back ups are on +r and want to know if the movie will get any errors or other problems when going from a +r to a -r. I will be using a dvd duplicator.

    thanks

If the backup discs are ok and the drive/s in the duplicator recognizes those + format backups, then most likely you're ok.

But,if you burned those older + format backups too fast,multi-tasked during the process, slapped sticker labels on them, used a crappy burner, and/or used crappy media, that leads to errors on that backup disc. Too many of those little errors or errors in the wrong spot, and you may encounter CRC error when trying to re-rip them onto the HD.

If you did any of the above on your previous + format backups, you may run into CRC errors while trying to re-rip them.

People find out the hard way, later on. They'll have something backed up,6 months down the road they need another copy of it and wham, crc errors. This is where crap media/burning too fast will bite you. You want the 1st copy to be as error free as possible. After that, they'll be a lot easier to re-rip later on.

If you can get onto the harddrive without any crc errors, you should be able to use whatever format you want to burn it to,and you'll be ok. After that is when the stand alone player compatability comes in. You may find a drive or so that played your plus format backups, but won't play your newer re-ripped dash backups. Dvd drives can do some screwy things when it comes to reading dvd backups.

I have re ripped them before but it was DVD+R to DVD+R, Not DVD+R to DVD-R. I have had very few problems with the +R to +R.

I've re-ripped dvd +R DL to dvd +r as well as the usual Dvd-r to +r and vice versa. Even on the fly using nero 6 and sonic and dual dvd-rw drives.

With decent media and 4 benqs,I'll re-rip and burn all day long, even with 4+ yr old backups.

No issues unless the backup/s I was trying to re-rip, were from crap burners like my HP640c and my brother's LG, or crap media from, which I learned 5+ yrs ago.

Here's a scan of one of my bro's backups, and anybody with a weak stomach, turn your head:

That is one hideous and unrippable backup that was burned by someone who usually uses whatever the cheapest media he can find, burns as fast as he can,and usually slaps uneven/puckered sticker labels on them. No sticker label on that scan pic.

Very hard to control other people's backups as well as your older backups. That's why quality is critical. Quality burners,media,4x-8x burn,no sticker labels,no multitasking. Make the 1st backup as perfect as you can. Impossible to get a perfect backup, but using those guidelines, you'll keep the errors low on your future backups.

Doing all the above helps to possibly be able to re-rip backups, but there's still the compatabity factor. Some drives have a harder time recognizing backups, even their own backups.

Why the sudden change to dash?

How many burners going into that duplicator and what model#'s are they?

Plus format all the way for me,except for the pricier inkjet printable media like Full hub Shiny and Ty Watershields.Last I recalled, they were only available in the inferior dash format.

Pioneer: Definitely favors the dash format and I'd stick with it if I had any pioneer drives.
Not so on some other burners like Benq/plextor. There's hacked firmware that you can crossflash on some pioneers to booktype-it's called the buffalo firmware.Keep that in mind in case you run into any no disc errors from your pioneer backups.

Dash format is higher than the basic plus formt, but lower than the plus format, after it's been booktyped to dvd-rom from a bitsetting capable drive. After booktyping quality plus format media to dvd-rom,good luck on finding a drive that won't recognize the backups it produces. It's not 100%,but pretty close.

Could you slap in one of your older plus format backups, open up dvdidentifer, click identify, click clipboard, and paste it back into your next post. It'll tell if your plus format discs are booktyped.
