I had the same problem with my GC. I installed a Viper GC Extreme and it wouldn't recognize any disks. I checked the POT and it was at 163. After trying different values (200, 180, 190) I ended up going to 148. It reads only 2 kinds of media (Maxell 8cm 1.4 DVD-Rs, and VERBATIM printable 4.7 8X) I would try those.

I know they say it shouldn't have a POT value of 165 or less but this is all I could get it to read with.

Sounds like the 04 is different... I have the 08 and went from the stock setting of 562 ohms to 224ohms and mine reads everything great. also if you get the Maxell discs they are the same media code as the highly touted Ritek G04 media(Ritek makes the maxells) My local Wal Mart carries the Maxell discs...they work great. I'd try the lower setting(120-145) with the maxell or riteks..that should work.. If it dont youll have to trade someone cubes...sell yours on e-bay and buy another one there.

Hey protoman1, can you do me a favor? When you figure your situation out, can you post your solution here? I have a similar issue, and it is likely media related. Also, what errors are you getting? Mine are "An error has occurred, Check instruction manual...". This is received before ever booting anything (no backup has ever booted on this console). All originals boot fine, as expected, before and after modification.

BTW, I am a computer engineering student, so I am very exact, and I have triple checked all my connections. All is well, with those. I also have tried *nearly* all laser pot values from 400 to 90 ohms (increments/decrements of ~20ohms). I wish I was able to compare a hash of the Duo Q rom with the one it is supposed to contain and check the pin outputs. But, prob just media I am using (but have tried 5-7 diff ones). I should try Ritek I guess.

ya np I got it all up and runing pirfict what you have to do is put you pot lower like to 100 it will then . the pot does not go down after 10 or whatever it says at wat you set it to - at lest for the time that I'v play I had no chang. I dont know if you can go under 80 but I dont thing you have to I'm good at 100 and so far all games worked, but 1 but that because of burning error. is if you have a 04 drive like me put you pot to 100 or so and it will work fine:) good luck

Hi, Could you please tell me which media are you using, protman? I would like to know for my own debugging issues. Also, does anyone know how to identify the drive number? Is it on the DVD control board, etc? Thanks again!
