backing up cd-r's

    Here's yet another cd-r longevity scare story:

    I think with the millions of cd's that have been burned over the past 5-10 years, we'd be hearing a lot more complaints by now, but I'm not an expert.

    But just wondering, what's the consensus on backing up important data or music that's irreplaceable? Are
    external hard drives the way to go or is it more practical to just check the cd's every couple of years + reburn them if necessary?

    This is kind of tough to believe because i have cds wich i recorded at least 5 years ago and still play perfectly and dont show any sign of wear.But beleiving that in 2 to 5 years they will get in bad condition i dont believe.
