I am using Nero to make a data backup that will only be read in other Windows machines. I keep getting an error that some file names are too long. It will not burn. I have tried ISO and UDF and bridge.

First it says "the following joliet files or folders had to be renamed" I click ok.

Then it says "This comilation does not meet the ISO 9660 standard...Are you sure you want to allow this?" I click ok.

It then goes to burn and gives me an error saying "the listed files have no unique joliet names" and it does not burn.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks,
    Dan

The first msg is telling you that your filenames are too long to meet ISO9660 standard and when you click OK without shortening the names the 'compilation will not meet ISO9660 Standard' message appears which is telling you that some drives may not be able to read your finished disc if you dont fix them. I have seen the 'no unique joliet names' error before when burning mp3 discs and I am betting that you have a bunch of long filenames that are very similar that is causing the problem. With the mp3 discs I had problems with I just changed my filenames to show the track number first so all the filenames didnt start with the same letters (aka the artist) and then nero quit squawking. Not 100% sure if it will work but give it a try with a re-writable.

I ended up just doing that- shortening the file names that were too long. It worked perfectly. I ended up using udf and it read perfectly in win98 and xp.

    thanks,
