Recently I had to have my computer reformated and luckily I have 2 hard disks so I was able to save my info onto the other hard disk. My question is if I want to back up Music & Photos in the future should I be saving them on a CD or a DVD. Can you save music to a DVD. If now how many CD's would I need to back up around 300 songs. Any info would be great. Thanks.
It would normally only take 2 cds 3 at most to back up 300 songs. You back up to either CD or DVD it doesnt really matter just as long as there not cheap crappy cds/dvds/. And yes you can save music to a DVD pretty much anything on your computer can be saved onto dvd. hope that helps
Thanks Dude2099. If I was puting 200-300 songs on a CD do I have to compress them in anyway or is that just in their normal format, because I didnt think I would even be able to get 100 songs on 1 CD. I thought only about 20 or so would fit.
Only about 20 songs will fit on a CD-R if they are 4:00 minutes or so long and in the .wav format that CD audio discs use. To get 300 songs on a CD-R, the songs would have to have been compressed to a format like MP3. A CD-R holds 700MB of data; a DVD+/-R holds 4,370MB of data or about 6.25 times more data. (The 4.7GB capacity of a DVD is in decimal terms, not binary. Your computer thinks in binary and will only see 700MB for a CD-R and 4,370 MB for a DVD.)
Thanks JoeRyan. If I was to compress my music to mp3 format to fit on a CD would they still play ok. Also how do I compress music from my hard disc onto CD. Also if I saved my music to DVD would it play in a normal cd player.
Ok if you have 300 songs on your computer im guessing that they would be mp3, check the extension at the end of the files "Barney - I love you[bold].mp3[/bold]" If its not displayed while your in Windows Explorer click on tools then go folder options then view and click on hide extensions for known file types it should show them now. If you were to put 100 songs onto a cd(in data mode in nero) they will only play on a DVD Player that supports MP3 which is almost 99% of new ones now days and basically anything that says mp3 on it. Now if you go to create a Audio cd in Nero like Joeryan said youll only get 20 songs on a cd average depending on length of the songs. Now about the Compressing part a program like Nero will automatically do it for you when select Audio CD. Yes, insofar as WMA is also compressed music. But to play those files you would have to use a DVD player that plays MP3 files as well as WMA files. (I don't think that is common, but I'm not sure.) A PC with Windows will easily play both if you don't mind playing music on a PC.
I used to save pictures, music, etc. on CD-RW's until I got a DVD burner and now I save everything on a DVD-RW so I can reuse it and update it. I have 2 that I rotate with. I format one and then when I am ready to add items like pictures, etc. I have one ready to burn to. I then just format the other and have the new one ready.
