BACKUP a BACKUP

I have recently decided to do away with my DVD collection altogether and run everything on a computer based entertainment center.

One problem...I am trying to create ISOs of all of the movies that I have collected and I am getting read errors on DVDs (not originals but backups) that are working perfectly fine in an actual DVD player.

I have always used DVD+R to back my movies up.

I have a NEC-3540A with a mad dog firmware upgrade installed. I do not have many if any issues when making a backup from an original DVD.

I have a pretty strong machine that is well maintained and free of issues as well.

Any help would be appreciated to finish out the last few movies I need to transfer to the new HD.

Use you originals for backups....Why use backups for this?

 

Well over time some of them have been pretty well messed up. It only comes down to about 15 or so of them.

Mostly kids titles...I made backups to use when those finally failed in the DVD player. Well they still work, but are way too dirty and scratched to use (I tried) and so I figured that I would just use the backup to make the ISO...well that is when I am getting read errors. I have had a few that there is no original left anymore. Long gone and we had been using the backup as the replacement.

I actually managed to get DVDFab to make a good copy of it and then DVDshrink made a good ISO...I may have a solution to some of them.

I was just curious if it was the way the backup was made that can cause the read errors? Is this common? at least 12 of these are backups that have never even been out of the sleeve until I tried to make the ISO from them.

what brand media are the backups on ? some brands suffer data loss over time .

 

The majority of my backups are Maxell. The ones in question are all Maxell except one which is a NexxTech or something like that..

Does it matter if they are +R or -R when making movie backups? I only use +R, but maybe -R would be a better choice?

Which Maxell? Some are bad. MIJ?

I know I got screwed on Sonys. At the time, I didn't know the difference between quality and cheap media and I bought some Sonys and while they work, I can no longer run them through the PC.

+R is better because it's newer and can be written as Rom. -R is older so if you have an older DVD player, it might be more compatible with it. Either way, I'd always choose +R.

 

So I need to use +R...(I will still be making a hardcopy backup of anything that I buy)...however...I will be making an ISO for the theater box...

SO...for a good hard backup what is the best all around +R at a good price and where can I buy them in bulk for a lower price?

I usually stock in spools of 100 and I have less than 20 and need to buy more now...

I am sadly very anal about my DVD collection...not the actual DVD, but the movie collection...That is why I go three deep with the backups...the original, the hard backup, and now the ISO backup.

Anyway...suggestions?
