Attempted to create a backup as folows: 1. ran dvdfab decrypter and saved the movie to the hard drive 2. ran dvd shrink. 3. burned both the audio_ts and video_ts directories from the hard drive to a blank Verbatim DVD+R The movie plays perfect on my pc's dvd drive, but will not play on the dvd player connect to my tv. Tried it on another tv/dvd player with same result.
I remember the speed was not selectable but I think it was around 2x. Used Roxio. What do you mean by 'booktyped?'
Not all players will play +R media, you need to booktype the disk to DVD-Rom so those players can play it. You can only do this if your burner is capable of booktyping, only certain burners have the ability. Check here to see if your standalone player is capable of playing +R media. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers Roxio is not the greatest program to use for burning, you would be better if you used Nero if you have it.
Most burning programs during the burn process can bitset a disk to tell a player what type of disk it is. By booktyping as a DVD-ROM it tells the player to treat it like a commercial disk. This tricks many older players into playing an otherwise unrecognized disk. Was this by chance a +R DL disk? Those won't play on most standalones without booktyping. Download DVD Identifier from my sig below and report back the media code of the burned disk. Also see what the media and booktype are? I think the types are in square brackets [ ] [ ].
The results from this same pc/dvd writer/verbatim dvd+r always worked fine on my stand alone DVD/TV using DVDXcopy xpress, so I don't think the problem is in the hardware... Try another burning program other than Roxio and see if the backup works. Make sure the fw on the 1100A is up to date. http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads//FlashFirmware/
Usualy this problem derives from DVD's burned at higher than 4X speed. The second major reason is the booktyping of them. Both theese suggestions are already mentioned before. Verbatim 8X or 16X 4.7 GB are excellent. Toshiba's many models of stand alone players have problem for non commercial (stamped) discs. Check your equipment. As far it concerns Roxio's application never used.
That's a really old burner and you're going to run into problems with a lot of the newer media because there are no more firmware updates for that old burner and the drive is going to have problems dealing with some of it.
Loren, the good news is that a brand spanking new drive capable of burning at lightning fast speeds and double layers to boot is only $40US and an internet purchase away. We don't recommend burning at max speed, 4X or half the rated media speed.
Thanks Guys, You've been very helpful and given me plenty of food for thought. I'm going to consider Nero, and if that doesn't help, may upgrade the NEC. I didn't realize new fast dvd writers are so cheap.
Good luck, upgrading may just be the answer. As I stated I have a NEC 1300A which is just a step above yours I still use it but have much newer and better drives now and if you go to NewEgg you will get one at a very reasonable cost.
