    Hi,

I've been reading the forums for a couple hours now and I still have a couple questions regarding backups. From my understanding, I need a DVD-rom, flashed with KREON, which will be able to read the Xbox360 disc. Then the DL DVD+R burner to burn.

Also, from what I've read there are no specific burners and dvd-roms that are required, but some may work better than others. What are the best ones to buy? Some use the samsung, some pioneer...does it just come down to cost?

    Lastly, I already have a DVD burner/dvd-rom that's a few years old(NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE/ATAPI 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache Model ND-3550A). Can I flash this with KREON and just use this as the DVD-ROM? Or is it too old? Not good enough?

    Thanks for the help.

No, only specific Samsung drives can be flashed with Kreon firmware.

I seriously doubt you can use Kreon on your old NEC burner. You need a DVD-ROM flashed with Kreon (about 30 bucks).
    Models:
    Samsung SH-D163B (SATA)
    or
    Samsung SH-D163A (IDE)

Burners? I would think most burners would work. I've used six different burners with no problems whatsoever. Sony, Pioneer, HP, LiteOn, Yamaha and a generic No-Name.

Also, be sure to use Verbatim DVD+R DL discs (made in Singapore).

You can also use the older samsung drives (SH-D162C/D). Make sure your burner can write DVD+R dl.

just so you know, there are more than 2 versions of the samsung drives that can be flashed with the kreon firmware, i believe there are 6 of them, plus 2 hitachi drives as well.

however, ebay is about the only spot where you can regularly find these drives for sale.

Yep the poster above me is correct. If you want a kreon drive you can buy them off ebay pre flashed or non, and they have sata and ide versions of the samsungs they work great and no angx360 check needed.

So after doing some more research...

I can only find the Samsung SH-D163B (not flashed) on ebay for $30-$35 coming from South Korea.

Some people also said you can use the Samsung MS25 or MS28 (which I think is an actual xbox360 drive, right?)I have the benq.
This I have found on ebay also (not flashed) for $30-35 coming from the US.

I also found others saying that Samsung is better than Hitachi, so would anyone recommend the SH-D163 over the MS's?..both being in same price range.

I bought Verbatim made in Singapore, but I have read that the BenQ in the Xbox360 can sometimes have trouble with Verbs and that Memorex has worked better with it. Anyone else able to back this up?

    Thank you.

just get the unflashed samsung kreon drive from ebay and flash it yourself. it only takes about 2 minutes to flash it.

and memorex works better than verbs??? yeah, right, that person is on crack or just stupid (probably both). benqs never have problems with verbs. hitachi drives are the only picky drives out there.

Here is the list for the drives that are able to be flashed with Kreon:

    Samsung SH-D163A (SATA)
    HP TS-H353A (SATA)
    Samsung SH-D163B (SATA)
    HP TS-H353B (SATA)
    Samsung SH-D162C (IDE)
    HP TS-H352C (IDE)
    Samsung SH-D162D (IDE)
    HP TS-H352D (IDE)

Like the other members said, use Verbatims from Singapore. As for burners, I'm sure any name brand burner will work. I have a Samsung SH-S223Q (SB-03 firmware) and it is a champ. No coasters or dirty disc errors.

I didn't mention the SH-162C and D because they seem so much harder to find.

This spot sells pre-flashed drives 45-50 dollars. (I haven't used them, but know someone who has).

This is where I got mine, un-flashed. 23 dollars. They are out of stock at the moment (red shopping kart), but the re-stock very frequently (green shopping kart).
