Hi! I'm new to the forums and after looking over all the guides and faqs I could find am posting in the hopes of solving my problem. I recently replaced a Pioneer DVR-111D with a LiteOn SHM-165H6S and am no longer able to burn movie backups that will play on my LG dvd player (DN191H). When I backed up movies with my Pioneer drive using DVDdecrypter and DVDshrink burning to Nero7, the discs would play on any dvd player in the house. However, when I try the same process, using the same media spindle, but with the LiteOn drive, the backups will only play in my computers. If I put the discs into a dvdplayer, it will read for a long time before giving me a "disc error" message. The LiteOn drive has the latest firmware, I've made sure Nero has the booksetting to dvd-rom, and am burning at only 6x using my Memorex (made by ritek) media. On the suggestion of some people I went out and bought a small spindle of Verbatim 16x lightscribe media and tried burning a backup with that disc at 6x. The result is the same. Plays on my computers but same error in my dvd players. Is there something I'm missing? Or is it the LiteOn drive? I'd appreciate any help as this is frustrating me quite a bit. I never had a problem burning with the Pioneer, but recently gave that to my gf and got the new Liteon, I'm wondering if that was the right choice. Anyhow, thanks in advance for any help!
try using dvddecrypter to burn with. set to booktype rom and burn at 8x. u could try using imageburn, its newer than decrypter (and updated) and by the same person. i use verbatim 16x +r media and i havent made a coaster all year. ive had several liteon burneres and they all preformed well. here lately im using benq burners and they work great too.
there's got to be something different if you had success with your other burner and the software before and all you did is switch burners. I heard nothing but praise about the LiteOn burners and almost bought one myself... bought the BenQ 1655.....anyway...... switching to Verbatim was a great choice and should make a difference for you in quality of disk. but having a problem where you didn't have one before is puzzling. I suspect that Nero is having a problem with the new burner even though it writes to it. Otherwise you have a defective burner. These are the two choices... so following the good advise of Gamename.... switch your burning program...... I would use this great free program called RipIt3Me. Download the programs and follow the guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110, Download DVDDecrypter here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/DVD_Decrypter/1011845169/1 RipIt4Me is kept up to date and will do old DVDs as well as all the newer DVDs. Try this out and see if your burner does a better job. your latest firmware should be HS0D as found in the firmwarepage: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces If your firmware is not this version I suggest you download and install the newer version. welcome to afterdawn
Are you using the plus format media? If not, pick up some.Only the plus format can be set to booktype. If so,you may want to pick up a small pack of dash and test them out. When people switch burners, some players-picky-can tell a difference between burners.Usually a simple format change or booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom will take care of it. If using plus format, nero can do the booktyping for certain drives. Not sure about yours, but take for example: Nero6 booktypes with my Benq 1620,but not my benq 1640. Lite-on does have a special utility to set the booktype. Nero infotool won't tell me if my booktyped backups are actually booktyped. Here's a free utility that will tell you if they are booktyped: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm If they are not booktyped, here's where you can get the utility from lite-on: http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm
And here are other reasons why some players will play your burned disks and others will not: 1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x). Your new Verbatim disks can be burned at 8x! 2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual. 3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this: http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php 4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk! 5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch! 6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better! follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck. also read this: http://www.cdfreaks.com/print/article/113 why the +R media is better than the -R media
