i have an ASUS DRW-1604P DVD-RW (most recent firmware) that i think may have gone bad. when i try to burn a DVD it will get about 60% and fail (has done this the last 6 times). when i look at the DVD, there is a weird smear/splatter mark where the DVD failed burning. does this sound like a hardware problem or could it be related to software?

It could be a bad batch of blank media.

What's the Brand name/format/and speed rate of those blanks?

If you can find the MID code, that'd help. Nero and Dvd decrypter will show that MID code.

What firmware version did you update to?

I use TDK DVD-R 12x (I burn at 8x to prevent failure). I copied a rather lengthy error code but I dont know which part you need. Let me know what you need. Here is a pic of the DVD after failing. [IMG]

    TTG-02:

Definitely try some better media like Verbatim 16x. Or if you can find some sony/fuji/maxell -16x that say Made in Japan on the outer label.

You could also try a blank that is toward's the bottom of your spindle.Look on the bottom of a blank,in that same area where the burn stops.
I had a spindle of Office Depot +8x that had a flaw on 6 in a row. I burned 3 of them before I found out what that flaw was. They were ok after that area of the spindle.

You can check one more thing go to these site and see if your drive has got a updated firware or not. If it is up to date and you have had over 300 burns it might have died.

    300 burns?

It shouldn't even be broke in yet.Make sure you have the latest fw update.

It still sounds like a bad batch of media. Media quality is the #1 issue for dvd burning.Bad batches leave the factories, even on the finest media like Taiyo yuden and verbatim. Media can even be fakes.

#1 fix is switching media,or even using discs from another section of your spindle if possible-like 1 closer to the bottom.

Take note of that. After 5 or so burn errors in a row, windows reverts the transfer mode to PIO mode-for safety purposes. Go into device manager under IDE/ATA- Atapi controllers. Open up the primary and secondary controllers along with device 0 and 1.You may have 2 primary, and 2 secondary. Open each up,1 at a time/click advanced and make sure they all say UDMA,DMA,or either of those including "If available". Make sure none of them say pio mode. If any of those controllers say pio mode, click the drivers tab and uninstall-reboot. More than 1 controller in Pio mode, uninstall each-1 at a time, and reboot.

Can you post a burn log?
If it's a nero log, edit out your serial #. It's on top of the log, starting something like this:

    1A23-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
