I have a 1tb seagate external hdd that one day went to hdd heaven. It is not recognized thru usb port and also tried to connect directly to mboard w/out success. I have double checked all connections and cables. Its not even 2 yrs old, so I can get it replaced. The drive itself was almost completely full. Mostly my movie collection. I know that backing up is the first lesson here, but how do u back up a tb of movies? With another tb hdd and then another tb hdd after that, and so on. I realize that I will probably have to redo my movie collection, but is there any logical way of accessing my hdd.
The only thing I can think of is trying to connect the external to a different computer. You could put the movies on disk if that fits your plan. Otherwise, ...
Ustop it sounds to me like the drive it totally dead however, depending on how much you need all that data back you might be able to salvage it. this link here might serve you some use http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com/2006/01/freeze-your-hard-drive-to-recover-data.html its extreme i know but it might just work, you could also open the hdd to trace for any cracks, bad solders etc.. Another last resort could very well be taking the actual platters out and fixing this to a duplicate model of hdd and recovering it that way. and btw you might wanna look at a raid setup for your collection, you could easily make an enclosure with 2x1tb drives in there and doing a mirror setup that would certainly stop any future losses. Sounds like your drive controller is shot you could try replacing the controller with another of the same model.
Thank u all for the quick replies. I'm tryin freezer thing right now. I gotta say I'm a little suprised that there r suggestions, other than paying someone a 700 bones to get it off there for me. You know, I get that hdd's go bad, but I do everything with my pc. Movies, tv, games, etc. I can get new hdd, but is seagate the way to go. My os is on a seagate that I have had for almost 4 yrs, (yes, I back that up), but really, all that is on it is os, programs and I can redo that stuff. I don't expect a hdd to last for 20 yrs but if I need to spend more for a brand that they don't sell at walmart or best buy then I will. DDP, thank you for mentioning that I could void my warranty, but whats the point of getting new hdd if it does same thing. I should have mentioned b4 that although most of hdd has movies on it that I can replace, there are a few things I'm not so sure about. Like pictures, tv shows, and rare videos I have collected thru the yrs. No, not what ur thinkin. Certain bball, fball games and etc. I will try ur guys tricks. Thank you very much ur time. Well, well. I froze hdd for awhile. When I plugged it in it started spinning all kinds of whacky. Pc still would not recognize it, so I put it back in freezer and searched the net for some more answers. Couple hrs later took hdd out of freezer, plugged in, and... the drive started spinning like it wanted to go to the moon. At this point I figured I might as well tear it apart and see what's up. Got to the last screw and besterd stripped out. Guess my torx was one size to small. (That's what she said.) The drive now had thawed for sometime and I'm done messing for the nite, so I plugged the drive back in for fun, and what do ya no. The freakin thing pops up on desktop and I'm able to copy what I needed to other hdd. The stupid thing has been doing its thing fine since. I know I still need to replace, but what the fudge. I did mess with warranty sticker. Is it wrong to still try and send back for replacement. Thank you much fellers.
