Haha I had the same horrible problem. I'm not actually sure what fixed it, but I'll tell you what I did. I changed my Settings from Lowest> Medium Graphics. (This didn't help the fog, but made it easier to navigate out of the fog) I left the foggy area and saved my game. I installed the DirectX off of the CD with the game.
