Hi, been under this config. for about a year - no problems. The DVD data is on an external HDD, and I burn with an external drive. USB 2.0 connects it all. Within the past week I've started to get failed data verification in Nero. Even though they're Taiyo Yudens, I think the problem might be these new discs I'm using. 8x Silver Thermal Taiyo-Yuden DVD-R. The only thing I can think of is that the discs are bad or my burner is dying. I know there is a low amt. of physical memory available in the Nero log and I'm going to look into that and post back. But can anyone spot something I'm missing from the Nero log or the drive test or media quality test below? Thanks. You have Nero's INCD packet writing thing, you have to get rid of this. To do this you have to uninstall Nero completly using Nero's cleantool. After you've used it to uninstall reinstall but this time choose to not install INCD. Also your Nero is a few versions behind. Current version is 6.6.0.16 That's all I got from it, might be missing something.
Thanks for the quick response... I can remove InCD if that is what's causing the problem, but if so, I don't understand why it hasn't caused any problems for me in the past year. That doesn't make any sense to me. But, if so, what could I use for packet writing software instead? Also, doesn't the disc look all messed up on the second image above? By the end of the scan it had a quality rating of 0, and I don't understand all the errors but there were a lot of them.
Where'd you buy your disks? I just bought a spool of 100 4x Silver Taiyo-Yuden DVD-R (DVD01X0240 from supermediastore.com) and I've just burnt 4 coasters in a row with KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR. I'm using Nero 6.6.0.12 and the lastest FW (A110) for my Iomega Super DVD.
I'm glad you asked. I got them from supermediastore, same as you, and I also wasted my money on 100 of them. And I was planning to update this thread today because I have determined that it [bold]is[/bold] the media. So, yes it looks like we got ripped off. Here's why. I was pretty sure that this problem wasn't popping up because of my Nero version, the presence of InCD, or my drive's firmware, because, I wasn't doing anything new and fancy, I have used these discs before (TYG02's) with no complaint from my burner, which already has the latest firmware available. And I have had no real burning problems with my current set up for at least one year. As far as I can tell these discs are NOT fakes. The coded media stamp reveals TYG02 and everything else it should (the G is for -r's, if it's a +r disc the code can be TY02 with no G). The inner ring hub code is GG000123. Authentic as they may be, I am quite sure that they are garbage. But originally I was not expecting the media to be the problem. This is why you search for Taiyo Yuden's and why you care about buying genuine ones from a reputable seller, and why you are willing to spend more money to get them. (Even though I got mine at a pretty good price....however I would have paid more for no-name discs that weren't garbage) So I hesitantly cleaned out my Nero, InCD and my registry with all the appropriate tools. I reinstalled Nero and brought it up to v. 6.6.0.16. I freed up extra memory by searching out processes that I could kill before the burn and I tried again. Same exact problem, same exact place. I'll post a Nero log of this below to prove for anyone interested that I changed these things and have all the other basics covered. (DMA on, burning @ 4x, etc.) Finally I decided to test the media. I couldn't get my hands on a working copy of DvdInfoPro so I decided to learn more about Nero's CD-DVD speed. I went to the tool's own website at http://www.cdspeed2000.com and downloaded the latest version (free, with or without Nero) This version just came out earlier this month I believe (probably alongside new Nero 7 releases). I also learned about K-Probe and how to use it from here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=80545 (When doing these scans it's important to know that you will get a certain amount of errors with any disc, and realize what the acceptable range is and what the variance in the output graphs can tell you. Also you should do these scans on the slowest speed you can stand to wait for, preferably 1x or 2x) Before I bought these TY's from supermediastore I had been using a lot of the Maxell RG03's from WalMart ("made in Japan"/white inkjet-printable tops, used to be able to get 'em in Gold mirror tops) dvd-r's. I conducted surface scans and File scans & CR2/PI/PO error scans on several of these (which have already seen some wear and tear by this point) and scanned several of the TY discs from the bundle to see how they matched up. The comparison is revealing. I won't get too technical, but to make it short: The disc quality, surface scans, CR2 error scans, pi errors/failures, po failures, etc. of the Maxell's are excellent (even though they have been used a few times already) -- consistent and not very high, well below the minimum standards for a 'good quality disc.' No big surprise right? RG03's are pretty good. The brand-new TYG02's usually caused the testing to abort before the scan even finished, and from what you could see on the incomplete graphs you would think someone rubbed them with sand before packing them up. These discs (the ones we got...not all TY's of course) are absolutely unnaceptable, and completely useless. I warn you that even if you get a good burn on the random one or two that you should back that data up on a different disc asap. I've gone back to burning successfully upon switching media. I didn't immediately start pointing the finger at supermediastore.com...my first thought was "I must have a bad batch." I will wait until I'm in a gambling mood before I buy from them again. One of the only reasons I did buy from them is that they present themselves in a very reputable way when it comes to TY's, even going as far as to point out how to spot real ones (which conveniently, and maybe truthfully look just like the unbranded spindles of TY's they have for sale, which we bought) and they have a picture of some certificate that says they're the "sure thing" when it comes to TY media. On that point, if anyone wants to buy the 65 or so crappy TYG02 8x silver thermal wrapped dvd-r's that I still have which I bought from Supermediastore.com, I will gladly print something up real quick that says you should buy them from me if that makes you feel more comfortable. P.S. - I'm going to contact the store for a solution. If they provide one I will be fair and post it here. But my experience tells me that if they were willing to sell this junk in the first place they weren't planning on providing a lot of post-sale customer service. - you're gonna have to close down more programs prior to dvd work/burning to free up more memory whilst there's always a bad batch of discs out there to be had (bear in mind i've only skim-read the thread so far, i think i did see you mention the physical state of the disks) i personally would also think about whether it's the burner. My burner started playing silly beggars recently, well it was still burning fine as it had done for 2000+ burns, but my top notch Verbatim TYG02's were skipping upon playback. I tracked down problem to the burner and replaced it and re-did the failed burns. No more skipping movies. - just something to keep in mind to check out..
I'm backing Creaky up on this one - i had a similar problem and was tempted to blame the media until i replaced my burner. The old one was giving awful scans and i thought maybe i just got a bad batch of TY TYG02's so as a last resort i replaced my burner and ta-da! Perfect movies again! Woo!
I may have another theory on this. I noticed that on these bad burns, there was a notch in the outer most track rings where the burn had failed. Upon closer examination, I can actually see the defect in the media. The surface has been dimpled, like it was poked from the bottom of the disk in one spot. It is hard to tell whether this is just the inner foil or the outer plastic surface as well. It looks like a manufacturing defect to me. There are no tell tale gouges or nicks, just a warp, like those gravity well graphs of space-time (to borrow a visual analogy. Like the first picture below without the "sun.") In the photos, you can see the notch that was created by the laser scattering past the dimple. I doesn't appear that every disc is like this, just the first half dozen or so off the top of the stack. What significance if any that has is not clear. They weren't damaged after packaging, as the outer protective plastic disc was undamaged and besides, any physical contact would have to come from underneath to match the direction of the dimple. (There was another thread where someone mentioned finding the first few discs off the top of his stack of TY's as also bad, but he assumed it was a static electricity thing. Related? Who knows?) One other observation. While looking through a number of the other discs, there appear to be a few that have splatter marks on the surface. Almost like something was spilled on them, but it is a defect inside the disc, not out. Don't know if this affects the burn quality or not, but another indication that perhaps TY's manufacturing quality is taking a dive? I will try another disc or so out of the stack and report back when I know more. Brian
Here are the pix of the disc with the "splatter" marks on it. Other discs in the pack had similar markings, but this one was by far the worse. Haven't tried to burn it yet.
Thanks creaky, blighter and bspisak for the responses and the ideas. @ creaky - I was waiting for someone to spot this. This is just one log from when I was still tweaking. I have since cleared up a load more memory. Still, if it really was an issue with having enough available memory, I would have expected to have this problem with non- Taiyo media as well. @ bspisak - That's messed up. I'll take a look at my media also and post here if I have anything that looks similar. If these discs are passing through environments that cause this kind of abuse, I wonder if some discs can still be affected without visible deformations. Also creaky, regarding the burner, it did cross my mind that my burner was crapping out. Actually, I was basically convinced of this after I had replaced and updated Nero, removed InCD, etc., and I was still having problems. It is always possible that another burner would handle these Yudens better. That being said, these discs still fail a bunch of quality tests. Now, I think I know your feelings on this -- I was just viewing a thread in the 'media' forum about disc scans where you said something in one of the threads like 'I don't get the point of disc quality scans. To me, the disc is either good enough or it's not.' I basically share this point of view but the fact remains that these discs aren't good enough. In my DVD player the difference is clearly visible with the naked eye. My dvd writer does have disc quality scanning support, and I'm not sure it's coincidental that they scan other discs, which I had no problem with, and show them as 'no problem discs', but while scanning these problematic TY's, they show them filled with PI/PO errors [bold]above and beyond[/bold] the acceptable norms for a quality disc, etc. I also know that different burners can read the same disc differently, or the same disc when scanned twice can produce different results. This is why I've scanned MANY from each control group and scanned them at slow speeds. There is only one consistency - the bad discs produce horrible scanning results and the assumedly good discs from the past show no problems with good results. Also don't forget that I am able to write to these discs just fine. It is the data verification that is always failing. Sure a better writer might be able to handle the discs by re-reading the damaged blocks/sectors over and over, and do a better job of that than my writer, but I'd rather have my writer let me know that the disc isn't quality (when I paid for, and was expecting a quality disc) so I know what to expect when I put it into DVD players or computers in the future. SuperMediaStore.com update - they did issue me a return #. They state that they need to inspect the media for themselves once they get it before deciding what to do. We'll see. Who knows, maybe I have been too hard on them in my previous post. I shouldn't necessarily assume that they knew they were sending out sub-par media. On the other hand, as anyone can see from this thread, and as other threads have shown which I've cited above, I'm not the only one who has had this exact same problem with this manufactured disc from this supplier.
@yeardley - re the memory - you're quite right about that affecting other media too. i always make every journey useful ie if i see a logfile i go right thru it, though i'm not always clear enough ie the stuff i mention doesn't necessarily always have a direct effect on the failure in question; with stuff like Nero we have to get all the basics sorted then we narrow down the cuplrit(s) hopefully, that's all... i usually check each blank that i go to burn, i just glance for imperfections such as you've got on your discs. i got unlucky with a few Verbatims once, a few blotches in the same section of a few discs. luckily it's very rare i see imperfections, but it obviuosly happens, sometime we get stung by crap discs. it's very unnerving but it just shouldn't happen. if nothing else it gives the bad media advocates an excuse to say not all decent media is worth buying
Just to follow-up: I've now burned ~15 discs in a row out of this batch. Even the splotchy one burned and verified fine. It appears that only the first 6 had the dimple defect causing my problems. When I emailed supremediastore.com, I had a return email and RMA number 10 minutes later. I'm glad they stand behind their media. Brian
