Just found this forum as one of the few places on the net mentioning this software (found a dozen places to d/l the program, but the site listed in the docs is merely a search page for more CD/DVD burning software). BurnAtOnce was recommended to me as a freeware replacement for the bloated Nero. Problem is - it won't burn anything! Everytime I try, whether audio or data, I get this message: cmd finished after 0.001s timeout 180s Power calibration not supported. ?: I/O error. : scsi sendcmd: retryable error CDB: 2A 00 FF FF FF 6A 00 00 1A 00 status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION) Sense Bytes: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 24 00 Sense Key: 0x5 Illegal Request, Segment 0 Sense Code: 0x24 Qual 0x00 (invalid field in cdb) Fru 0x0 Sense flags: Blk 0 (not valid) cmd finished after 0.000s timeout 180s ERROR: Write data failed. ERROR: Writing failed. Both Nero and Ashampoo will write to this drive. Though, for whatever arcane reason, Nero will corrupt anything past 550meg; and Ashampoo locks the system if I try to copy a CD (I can copy the CD to the HD, then burn from there with no problems). Hence my trying BAO.
try a windows direct burn (doesn't support DVDs), just put a blank CD-R into your tray, then open the window through mycomputer (right click on the drive with the disc in and select open) and drag and drop some files onto the disc (lets go for 650mb-700mb just to test) if the burn doesn't come out right then a re-installation of drivers/firmware update is in order questions? comments? results!! post back! -tripplite
Whenever I let Windoze get involved in the procedure (especially copying music CDs), I end up with bad files: clicks, pops, static, etc., on music; or interminable waits in explorer while XP accesses the new CD, usually ending up with a "not responding" message in the title bar. All drivers (audio, video, and system) were reinstalled a few months ago while attempting to track down a sound problem. Both Nero and Ashampoo have been reinstalled recently. Ashampoo will burn a full disc with no problem, but locks the system (requiring a restart) if I try to copy a CD. Nero will copy CDs fine, regardless of total file size (up to the max, of course), but somehow corrupts anything beyond about 550meg when burning from the HD. BAO has never done anything but give me that message.
because you've mentioned you've gone through a reinstallation of windows its fair to say the drivers are in order, lets update your firmware? what is the drives model+version? -tripplite
Without tearing into my computer, this is all I know about the drive (it's positioned such that I will actually have to remove it from the case to read any labels): IDE\CDROMATAPI_CD-RW_52XMAX and NVIDIA nforce2 ATA controller V2.6 Until my "upgrade" to SP2 there was no trouble burning from Nero; it was immediately afterwards that Nero began telling me files weren't passing the CRC verification whenever I tried recording more than about 550meg (though it would copy a full music CD). That's why I tried Ashampoo, then BAO.
often times people have issues with programs not working as they did before when installing a new service pack, although this happens more times in a sp1 upgrade then a sp2 upgrade i still see it as your fault, uninstall nero with the removing tool find the one for your OS here http://www.nero.com/enu/downloads-cleantools.html after removing nero reinstall it, if you are still having issues we will go into driver, firmware and some other tweaks for troubleshooting you should also take a peak at those ATA cables (or IDE as their called) and the four pin power, i doubt they're your cancer but it doesn't hurt.... -tripplite
I will give that a shot. Thanks. I suspect this SP2 "upgrade" is also responsible for my digital camera software no longer functioning (windoze gives me the "found new hardware" bit every time I plug it in - even immediately after reinstalling the software and telling me it's ready to use) and for my video editing software to no longer accept an external input ("there are no capture (WDM) drivers installed on this system" - just after I've reinstalled the drivers and been told the software is ready to use). In each case I downloaded newer drivers, and an upgrade for the editor, ...to no avail. Oddly, SP2 also rendered Micro$oft's Flight Sim 9 virtua;lly unusable; aircraft lose power above about 5000ft and helicopters are completely uncontrollable. A reinstall of this monstrosity is out of the question (about 40gig of files and hours of reconfiguring ...that will only happen for a new computer).
FTR, cables/connectors are routinely checked; 40 years in electronics taught me a few things. I disconnect and reconnect everything about once a year.
Good advice there.. the voice of experience. Now about these errors. Power calibration errors are usually caused by very poor or damaged media.. el cheapo disks to be blunt. Now for cd-r they must be really pretty nasty.. either that or your cd burner (it's probably an Emtec people, I have one that is 6 years old and splendid still though it was only £9 when I bought it.. or something that arrived in a plastic bag with a nero5 disk.. cheapo oem, but pretty good actually) is eventually on the way out... though these more often start to make focus servo or positional errors 3/4 of the way through a burn rather than power calibration errors at the start. Reading that back it would make a lot of sense with the nero corrupting after 550MB and other odd things... Try burning slower.. say 8x or 12x and see if it improves matters. Also check you don't have Roxio or any of it's components left hanging around. Finally do a full system malware scan and take appropriate action for anything that crops up... If none of that works then bite the bullet, go buy some branded cd-r..try burning a couple and if nothing has changed invest in a new burner.
I use Sony, TDK, and Memorex blanks; Nero problem has occured with all three. Tried burning slower (typically use 32x anyway), all the way down to 4X. Just took longer to get the error message. (FWIW, when burning from Ashampoo - set to 32x - the message when it's through says it burned at an average of 4.2x.) Have no idea what Roxio is, though haven't seen any such nomenclature on my system anywhere.
TDK and memorex (memosux.. yup they are popular) are generally bad disks. I haven't seen and TDK cd's in a long time.. the last I had were borderline but seem to have held the burns ok for 5 years. the sony's should be ok. You have had this drive a long time.. am I right? And ashampoo manages a complete burn with success? (it uses a different burning engine to most) The fact that it reports a very slow burn regardless of the burn speed setting does indicate the drive is getting into difficulties. I would be interested (as would the other burning gurus here) in seeing a nero cd/dvd speed scan on a successfully burned disk.. and the logs from a failed burn or 2 It is very hard to tie this down by guesswork.. Maybe nero also left some in-cd packet writing bits and pieces hanging around. Like roxio that's another known baddie.. finally there was some strange malware reported a few days ago that interferes with cd/dvd drives.
Computer will be five years old in June. Hospital bills, with no insurance, negate a new system in the forseeable future. Ashampoo burns with no problems, full disc, passes verification; but Ashampoo will lock up if I try copying a disc (must restart windoze to access the CD drive again). Nero will copy a CD just fine, even a full one; it's only when burning files from the HD that it gives trouble. BAO gives me that message no matter what I attempt. You mention CDs only holding their data for five years. One of my major projects, on hold right now, is burning a forty year collection of albums to CD; what do I need to make certain these CDs have the "shelf life" of pre-recorded ones?
