Is one better than the other? I don't really understand the difference. Any info would be appreciated. :)

I've got 2 1620s and 1 1640 and they are excellent burners. The 1640 has more advantages. If you get either model, download the q-suite utility to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom.The 1640 does 8x rw burn speed as well as dash DL media. The 1620 can only handle dvd+r DL media, but you can also booktype the +dl and +rw as well.

The q-suite also has a program to control the overburn of the newer 8x and 16x media . The 1620 will burn majority of 8x media at 12x and 16x and issues can occur on standalones while burning at these speeds so the q-suite overburn utility won't work.

After booktying those backups, stand alone players will definetely have an easier time at recognizing your backups. The dash format does perform a lot less than the booktyped plus format backups when it comes to stand alone compatability.
