OK, I can't figure this out! I just bought a Benq DW1620, or so XP says it is, about 2 weeks ago. I bought some Staples 8x DVD-R media. The day I got the burner I burned a backup of something. It worked great and burned great. I didn't burn any more DVDs until yesterday and I burned some of my downloads onto DVD, and it burned perfect. I went and then tried to open the DVD later that night and NOTHING!!! ZIP, NADA, absolutely nothing... It turned the name "DVD-RW" into "CD-Drive", and it then put the total size and free space at 0. But, it reads CDs and DVDs fine and burns CDs fine. I tried flashing B7V9 firmware (the newest firmware) and it still didn't work. The funny thing is that [bold]it burns the DVD-Rs just fine[/bold], but won't read it. I even burned at 4x. I'm at a loss and I'd appreciate any help you guys can offer.
i have a feeling it's the media that is the culprit, the staples kind is far from being "good" to say the very least...in the pack you might have a few that are "playable" while others will not. check out my sig. for some GOOD media recommendations, if you say the firmware is up to date and it's a new burner, with no change to your setup from before and you HAVE had a good burn in the past, the indication of MEDIA being the problem is very high on my list~ hope that helps even a little bit~
Yeah.... like "kivory666" said; try to use other high quality media such as Fuji, Verbatim, TY, Maxell, Sony, TDK and make sure it says: "MADE IN JAPAN or SINGAPORE."
I hope that is the only problem. You know, I just realized that when I burned the last 2 DVDs I only burned them. I didn't try to read them afterward. So the media may not have been able to have been read all along. I'm gonna get a couple of TDK or Sony + and - today to see if that's the problem. I've never had a problem with TDKs or Sony with CD-Rs. We'll see if it works. Thanks guys.
Do you own another dvd-rom or dvd burner? If so then play the media you burned and see if those drives reconizes the data you burned. If so then "Houston", we have a problem."
if you can get your hands on the Sony dvd+r 1x-8x media MADE IN JAPAN, those are great Taiyo Yuden coded as in my signature, beware on some of the tdk, since SOME of the manufacturers will give you the dreaded CMC MAG discs. look for the MADE IN JAPAN when you buy new blanks locally, that is usually a pretty good indication~
HAHAHA (evil laugh)!!! SUCCESS!!! I figured it out. I updated my Nero version to 6.6, the new version. It still wouldn't work! So, I found a feature that enabled overburning on DVDs in the preferences. That was all it took!!! Seriously! That was it. It worked like a charm after that. It just proves that you can get any media to work with no problem. You just have to get the settings right. I am now burning like a mad man! When I was a kid I used to burn Playstation CDs. They were backups (risk of liability). It would not work forever. I finally got the settings right and it worked perfect. My theories are correct!!! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some more burning to do! Do not ask me how that changed my results, but it did and now works perfect!
well, congrats to figuring out your problem~ im glad you found a solution, however, i will have to disagree with you that you can use ANY media to get it to work. it really depends on HOW you define your successful burns...if you want them to last for awhile, which im sure you do, going with no name/cmc mag media i can guarantee you will not hold up to your expectations~ you seem thrilled right now since you have accomplished a resolution to your initial problem, i am just suggesting to use GOOD media in the future now that you have figured out a way to do it successfully~ all media are NOT created equal and unless you want to reburn your backup in the future, please consider my advice~ anyways, congrats on your accomplishment, i don't want this response to take anything away from the joy you must be experiencing right now~
BenQ has software (I think) where you can do PIE/PIF scans of your dvd backups to determine how good of a quality write. Taiyo Yuden is considered the best media out there, but I have achieved great success with Verbatim media as well. Please do dome PIE/PIF scans and maybe grab some better media to determine what media best fits your BenQ dvd burner
@ shoey, so are you agreeing with me or disagreeing with me? im sorry you have me confused since you quoted MY comment to him...it's 3am here in cali, sorry if this is blatantly obvious to anyone else, but i don't seem to follow... check my sig, i DO agree with you in that TYs and Verbatims are the ones I consider "good media", whether or not they will perform as flawlessly as they have for me on my setup on HIS, i do not know for his benq's..i don't have a benq drive, so no experience there~
Does it matter that much to you whether I agree or disagree? C'mon fellow member, I'm just trying to help by advising to do some PIE/PIF scans to determine what media better supports the BenQ. "It's in the scan's"= quality write
point taken...i just wanted to know your own personal opinion as to how important you consider good quality media in reference to what someone would call a "successful burn" that is all~
To me, getting the best quality write is most important and that means finding superior media, scan, scan, scan. Eliminates CRC errors
Thanks guys for your responses. I've got a question though. How does the quality deteriorate over time? That doesn't make any sense? The DVDs are plastic and metal. Plastic and metal do not deteriorate over time. The DVD and CD, if taken care of properly, will remain the same from the first burn. I'm curious as to how this works. I am not claiming to be an expert, as I just got my DVD burner. And don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming that you guys know less than I, because that would be naive to say the least. I'm only curious. Thanks guys, and gals as the case may be.
Kinda difficult to explain the quality of write so I'll post a few links where I uploaded some DVD+R and CD-R scans. Notice my burns have low C1/C2 errors (CD-R) and low PIE/PIF errors (DVD+R). http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=115081&page=39#post997095 http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=136562&page=3&pp=25
It has alot to do with the quality of the dye used in making the media. AZO dye is usually considered the best. It is used by Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and TDK(Made in Japan). That is whay you cannot make a blanket statement that all media made in Taiwan in crap. Verbatim is made in Taiwan and is great media. CMC is made in Taiwan and is substandard. Thats not to say it wont work. Everyones config. is different. What works for my system might not work for yours. I believe it is all about the media. Stick with quality Taiyo Yuden and your problems will be minimized.
Interesting... well like I said, I got it to work. All it took was simply enabling overburn in the NEWEST Nero version. 6.0 doesn't allow DVD Overburn for some reason. So I DL'd 6.6 and it works great. Yeah, I guess you guys are right about one thing--it matters on configurations and computer systems. Some people have had nothing but problems with their BenQs and generic DVD-Rs. Some people, including me, have no trouble at all with generic media. I dunno... I just wish that hardware makers would agree on one media standard. Oh well, that's what happens in the Corporate world. Can't get bitter about it, it'll be that way for the rest of humanity.
