So a coworker bought a 360 for 20 bucks from someone with no cables hdd controller or anything. I told him i would fix it and if i couldnt i would buy it from him for same price. this is benq drive btw.

All he was told is that it didnt read discs. So i figured it is dirty or needs pot tweak. I hook it up with my own cables and it doesnt read any games at all but it is reading movies(bad flash?!). So i start working on it and i see there is no warranty sticker and then i see there is no Foil tape connecting the drive and metal case which is usualy located under the front drive at the tray, but i could see residue from where it was. So i start thinking maybe this is a bad flash and someone told a fib to him about what was wrong or how it happened. So i decide before taking the drive apart i will just try to read the key to check it out. Key looked good so i thought what the hell im already here so lets flash this badboy now. flash went perfect (using bootable iso flash disc is awesome btw so quick) and just for giggles i try it out and it works!!! lol i tried the same game as before and it loaded up fine. so i eject and close with same disc, eject and close and it reads, try again and doesnt read with tray open error. , eject and close and reads, eject and close and open tray error.

So im guessing that the flash had nothing to do with the drive working or not but it is just dirty/weak laser and it was coincedence. But i just find it odd that before i flashed it i couldnt get it to read any games at all no matter how many times i ejected and closed the tray but after i flash it is working 50-70% of the time with retail and backups. So i plan on opening the drive still and cleaning/calibrating if needed.

The really good news is when i explained to the guy that it does work but could possibly need a new drive down the road plus the cost of getting a power brick, video cables, controller, storage device. We figured it would either cost the same as buying a new arcade and used storage or he might save 20-40 bucks. so he decided if he has to spend that type of money he would rather spring for a new one with warranty and stuff so he just said i could keep it and dont worry about the cost cause i have fixed his computers and stuff for him many times over.

So now i got a backup 360 if mine fails or gets banned YAY!!!!. I hope this one isnt banned tho lol.

but damn i am rambling sorry folks, just bored

I had somewhat of the same issue with a BenQ drive. It had stock firmware on it and it would read originals fine. Decided to go ahead and flash the drive to ix1.5. Would have "open tray" on some back-ups but not all. Eventually it had trouble reading original games. Tried to do a POT tweak and still having an issue. Clean laser and what not, still having a problem. Replaced the laser and now it is working great with ix1.5.
