    Hi,

I'm thinking of buy this drive. However I'm not interested in the lightscribe feature. Can I still use this to burn backups? I currently have a memorex burner, but want to replace with this and I have all the programs. I guess my question is if the BenQ would still work without using the lightscribe, or is there an alternate BenQ model. By the way this is my first post..so thanks for any help.

Yes you can use the BenQ DW1655 for backups. The Lightscribe is optional. If you want a model without Lightscribe go for the BenQ DW1650. I am not sure if it is out yet though.

According to 'word of mouth' the DW1650 is due out in the states in February. And yes, the 1650 burns discs as per normal. To lightscribe you have to get special lightscribe discs which, when you're finished burning on one side, you flip over and lightscribe an image on the top side. Neat huh?

Thanks for your help guys. They have it on sale at Newegg. Which one would you recommend? The OEM version or Retail version? I have the software already so will OEM be fine? Will it be compatible with my laptop? thanks.

OEM is fine, but you lost me when you said compatible with Laptop. If you are going to put it in an external case then yes. :)

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I brought an enclosure for my current burner. I was thinking of buying that BenQ and using the enclosure. I can't afford a desktop right now, so I'm using my laptop.

    ScubaBud,

Thanks man. Hey I was wondering if you can answer another question? I just brought some Verbatim dvd-r 8x discs. But my burns keep failing. I'm currently using a memerox burner. Does this mean the burner is not compatible with the Verbatims. Other brands like memerox and GQ work fine. will switching to the BenQ should this problem? sorry for so many questions.

I would first look for a firmware update for you burner. Firmware is the brain of the burner, telling it how to burn different name brand media. Try the link below for your burner.

As far as the BenQ1655, it's sure to handle anything that you will throw at it.
