I would say dvd flick, as I have been able to convert a 2 hour movie within 90 minutes. It's very simple to use, and the guides are helpful.

FAVC is also free and has an excellent encoder.

convertxtodvd 3.0 is the best if you need to do improvement to your avi, example cropping / increasing audio volume 16:9 to 4:3 conversion etc. That's the only program I use. It converts my avi's in about 30 minutes on my intel coreduo 6300. I've used the free dvdflick, but it won't convert a widescreen avi into a 4:3 DVD, but dvdflick does work very well for a free software.

I have been using this convertxtodvd , but have noticed the background music they play is very loud while the voices of the characters seem low, and the background music overshadows the voices sometimes
