What is the best burner that will do D/L? I sold my computer with
the Benq 1640 and I cannot find a new Benq 1640 anywhere. I am using my laptop and will get an enclosure kit to convert my burner to external. Is there a newer version of the 1640?

Lightscribe really is not a big deal to me. I probably will not use it. But if the 1655 is similar to the 1640, I may get it. Anyone know what the best Lite-On burner is?

I would have pulled out that 1640.Go over to whoever bought your old pc and steal that 1640 out of it, LOL

The benq 1620 is an excellent drive.Newegg.com has been out of them and the 1640 for a while, bummer!

Newegg.com has some drives on sale this weekend, and quite a few have free 3 day shipping:

    http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=5

Myself, burner quality is critical. High success rate for both playing and stand alone compatability. Here's what I'd go with if 1 of my 3 benqs died:

    Plextor 740A. This is a re-badged benq 1640. It's plextor's budget model with modified firmware. $60 after a $20 rebate.

    Lite-on 1693S- $37 with shipping

    NEC 3540 or 3550

Benq 1655- I don't see a whole lot of feedback on how it performs.

    Lg

    Pioneer

    Sony dru-820. Another re-badged Benq-1640!

Edit: I had dru-810 as the rebadged benq 1640, It is actually the sony DRU-820A.It also has the Masushita chip set.

I didn't know that I could use the 1640 in an enclosure kit when I sold my computer. Now that I know this tidbit of info, I am fuming.
I bought my dad the Lite-On 1693 for Xmas and it is a great drive.
I'm going to keep my eye on Newegg and hope to get a burner this week.

I've heard a lot of other members throwing in nec drives into those external enclosures.

The only issues I've seen on the Litey 1693s is it doesn't burn slow. Lot of 8x and higher media than the slowest speed it'll burn is 6x. No biggie though.

I love my 1640. I've got q-suite 2.0 to do the booktyping and control the over burning on it. I'd like to get another 1640 and throw it in my single drive pc. It has the 1620.My burn options in dvd shrink are 2.4x and max. Those benqs will burn just about any 8x speed media at 12x and 16x if I left it on max.

I still keep alert on newegg.com just in case they recieve any more 1640s. The 1650's are out,but over in europe-I believe?

BTW: That may be a weekend only special. I got my 1640 through one of those weekend specials last november for a total of $38

I just popped a BenQ 1655 into my friends PC, set up his QSuite, and tested the first 2 burns on his 56" widescreen TV. Using 16x Verbs, booktyped,he actually burned at 16x (against my warnings, he was just testing)and the movies looked great.

It takes 28 mins to do the lightscribe using my HP 640c. Sometimes I run them through a second time. That HP drive I have is junk. The backups from it has very poor stand alone compatability/too many crc errors/and coasters out way too many discs. I just use it to scribe and read.

Deadrum33: When you open up q-suite,how many tabs are available on the opening screen?

My 1620s have 5 tabs/my 1640 has 7 tabs. I was wandering if the 1655 has the overburn control tab?
Both pcs thatI ,have qsuite 2.0 and benq 1620s don't have that overburn protection. That is a very nice feature.

My 1655 using qsuite 2.1 has 7 tabs shown.

Saugmon, I may purchase the Benq 1655 or the Lite-On 1693S. The difference is the lightscribe feature. A $20 difference. I haven't burned in 2 weeks and I'm having withdrawels, sweating, burning
    when I pee :}

    Hi,
For external use, ideally UDMA 4 is required. At present that rules out BenQ 1650/1655. If you were happy with 1640 get either Plextor 740 or Sony 810 (Sony 820 is not in anyway related to 1640/1650/1655, it has Panasonic Chipset not Philips) & crossflash to BenQ. BenQ f/w BEFB is for external & will give UDMA 4 if used internally, therefore ideal for external use. Make sure caddy has right chipset as well to aviod problems.

You better get that checked out by a doctor.Could be STD! LOL
A shot of penicillin may take care of that. I'll have to notify Doc Ty!
