    hi

i would PERSONALLY suggest going with the Benq 1640, i got this drive from newegg about a month ago and it is working out VERY well~ about the same price as it is now~ :)

in terms of your "other choice", the nec3540, i have the nec3520, which is the previous model, it's a solid burner and very reliable; however, i am not familiar with the newer one, the 3540 as i have never used it before so cannot comment on the quality~ :) no experience= no comment for me~

that is just MY choice given those 2 to choose from, they are priced relatively close, but, the Benq1640 which i DO OWN and use now, is great~ :)

im sure others will comment later, but, the Benq, in MY OPINION, is an excellent choice for a GOOD price~

    docTY~

You missed the newegg.com sale on those benq 1640s over the weekend. They were on sale for $38 including free UPS shipping!

I ordered mine. I'm not sure of how strong of readers they are,but they are a quality dvd-rw drive with the bitsetting capability to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom.This booktyping of the plus format should make your backups play in a lot more stand alones and other drives.

Both my benq 1620s are very stong burners, but do have trouble recognizing my buddy's NEC 2510 dash backups. My additional Lite-on 167 will read just about anything regardless if it is a commercial or backup disc.
