i was just wondering which software you guys think is the best for converting from DVD to DivX. I've been using ImTOO DVD Ripper but the quality is crap, that could be due to my ratio settings. I dont know what the best settings are? I downlaoded two movies off the net, one being harry potter (i own the original) and eurotrip. In both of them the quality was MUCH better than mine i believe it came in standard 16x9 ratio and it had the little "DivX Video" icon in the corner. Do you think those movies were done by someone much more advanced or am i just using bad sofware?

I'd like to recommend a wonderful DVD ripper to you. It comes with a tutorial as well, which is most helpful!

Visit the product page: http://www.aoamedia.com/dvd_ripper.htm and click on "How to create a DivX/AVI file from a DVD?"

Just about everything that you download in terms of avi's will be XviD, not DivX since scene rules don't allow the use of DivX. You are talking about creating DivX avi's or .divx files though?

Like I said, most stuff that you download is compressed with Xvid, not DivX. DivX can decode XviD and if you haven't disabled it will display a watermark at the start of playback.

    Try AutoGK or FairUse Wizard.

Things like this come down to personal preference, however I think it is fair to say that it is fact that XviD is capable of better quality. Once you start imposing limits like 700MB filesize, etc. then that is a different matter since it comes down to which codec can achieve the best quality with the limited bitrate.

DivX has been updated a fair bit lately, whilst XviD hasn't. I would still say that XviD has the lead. Syskin is back working on XviD so there should be some more fequent updates now anyway so it can gain more of a lead back. Like I said for scene releases it doesn't matter. If DivX was better, releases would still be XviD. In the future maybe they will switch to x264. There have already been I think some internals done in x264. Hopefully they stop using avi as a container though.

celtic_d: scene rules don't allow the use of DivX

I didn't quite understand what this exactly means, any copyright stuff?

It means that you can't have a scene release encoded with DivX. Nothing to do with copyrights, if they respected them then there wouldn't be a scene.
