I'm generally an audio guy, but I've got several videos [vhs, tivo, etc] that I've captured onto my harddrive as AVI. AVI's are HUGE, what's the best format [divx, xvid, mpg, etc] to convert to, so I can archive them on to DVD or another dedicated harddrive? Most are between 15-30 min in length. Quality is an issue, but I'm looking for something comparable to 192 or 256kbps in MPEG audio compression. Thanks! --bp
if you want to watch it on a dvd player, you're stuck with mpeg2. if you have mpeg4 standalone player than you can go ahead with xvid, or divx. like audio too, video works best with 2 pass. variable bitrate. it depends on the video some are hard to compress due to its nature, like a shot in daylight has more detail than a dark night shot. unless you want to use quality encoding...1 pass encoding for pc usage xvid is my codec of choice presently. realvideo 10 works great too. http://forum.doom9.org/
