I have always made backups of my DVD's on blank DVD-r's, but now im still getting sick and tired of storing those... so what i would like to do is rip one of my dvd's to my hard drive like normal, but then convert it to Divx AVI, and store all those on an external USB hard drive to play on my TV. I will either use my XBOX 360 which can play Divx files, or i might consider buying a standalone DIVX/DVD player with a usb connection later on So what software will give me the best quality and size results? Im not a genius with video stuff, but not a noob either so if the best results come from a program that takes a little learning thats ok thank you! PS - any extra advice for converting is very much appreciated as well!
Also, im hearing a lot about this h.264 format or whatever... im not familiar with it, can someone explain? supposedly the compression is better yet it has even better quality than divx... is that true? Does h.264 have the same compatibility range as Divx? like, can you buy a dvd player that supports h.264? thanks
http://www.fairusewizard.com/lang_en/fairuse_wizard_dvd_divx_xvid_backup_tool_light_edition.html It's free and will do divx/xvid/h264, the best quality on a 700mb file is h264. It seems to play on all the media players that play xvid files. The only thing with fairuse is the input files have to in a ISO. It only processes ISO's. If you have a video_ts folder, just back it to an ISO with dvdshrink.
