I am looking to upgrade my Xbox harddrive. Can someone tell me if there is a certain brand or manufacture I need to get, or will any brand work? I've got my eye on a 200GB Maxtor. Thanks for the help!

I heard someone mention a special for $70 on a Maxtor 200gb hard drive, it's just that I don't remember what store has the special?? Sorry about that!!!!! Anyways, that hard drive will work great as long as it's parallel ATA 100 and not Serial.

Okay. I settled on the Maxtor 200 gb, but I've run into a common problem. My system is only recognizing 128 gb of the 200 gb drive. What do I do to get the space I'm missing? Can somebody help? I'm running the Xbit mod chip with the M8 Plus bios. Thanks!

I got it all worked out. I had to switch from the M8 to the X2, and it worked like a charm. Thanks again for the support!

Man, that's real good. On the average I see 200GB WD HDDs go for about $115 so yeah, you came out like a bandit!

Man, I just paid $149 for my 200gb Maxtor at Best Buy. That sucks.

I did notice that when I pulled my old Xbox hard drive out, it was set to "cable select". Most of the tutorials I've read on swapping hard drives said it should be set to slave. Does this really matter? I just left mine on Cable select because that's what the original was set at.

You can get good deals most of the time at newegg.com any day. I stop going to BestBuy or CircuitCity unless I need something really fast.

Where the HDD is positioned on the cable, YES, it's in the slave position but I've never had a problem using the jumper on cable select either. You should be fine.

Q: What's the best HDD for the XBOX™??

A: The LARGEST one you can afford! (i.e. a +400Gb HDD)

Hey man congrats on your new status.

The largest I would recommend would be a 400GB. The most stable size I would recommend is a 350GB as for large capacity. I've had issues with my 400GB in the past but 350 and below have always worked like a charm for me. No matter what, make sure you just back up your info regardless of the size you use.

I think the biggest problem you'll have to face with a large Drive is heat! Not sure if it was the fact that the 80Gb I first replaced my stock Drive with was a 72,000RPM. Or the fact that it was a loose artical in a Plastic Box at the local Electonics Shop. (but I learned Two things! 1 Buy your HDD at a Computer Store and not at some Electronics Store! and 2 use a 54,000RPM Drive),.

Since I did that and replaced that dead 80Gb with a 160Gb HDD that ended upbeeing chaeper then that which died on me! >=(
Heat issues are someting worth takeing into consideration. So when I get ready to upgrade my BOX soon. I'm going to probably get an Xtender Case mod for it too. I mean we all should know how tight it is inside that XBOX™ Case! it's a wonder that they all don't burn out...
