then a duo3 gold or the latest modbos would do good for you but if u can get ur hands on a matrix infinity then that would be the ultimate chip for you.

alot of good information in here .

Im not in a big hurry to bust open my slim just yet so Im thinking about going with magickey.
So from what i read this might or might not shorten the life of my laser ?

If you have a v12, then it is highly recommended to install a laser fix. Even playing retail games can still cause laser burnouts (also less common). It's due to faulty hardware in the PStwo.

I've done a couple v12 + laserfix + HD Combo + modchip setups, and they work great even years later.

I've got Swap Magic and an external hard drive, I love it!

It's easy and faster then a disc, and I've never had any problems.

When I go round people's house or something, instead of taking all my games, I just bring my hard drive and Swap Magic, and then I can play all of my games, and I have quite a few so it's really easy.

But it's your choice, because my old fat PS2's laser is almost complteley dead because of copyied discs, but it loads my hard drive like a charm.

My Swap Magic 3.6, 2 bits of sellotape and one piece of the swap tool works for me on my 79003 PS2.

I just wanted to update, I got a matrix infinity (green dot) and installed it in my v15 slim, I couldn't be happier with it! Has a lot of features and settings and boots everything I've tried on it 100% of the time. awesome and high quality chip, i'm proud of it.

Laser fixes are only required on certain models up to v12 ,some v14's need them but it depends which model v14 you have, best bet get one of the latest PS2's & if i'm not mistaken the later modchips i.e core duo 3 ultra etc come preinstalled with hardware that corrects the laser or prob or something like that ???

    Hi there,

I've got a slim PS2 (SCPH-79002) V16 PAL. I'm planning of getting it modded at a local place and they seem to have Messiah750, Duo2, and Modbo 750 chips. I'm currently trying to check which chip they offer in their installation package. Any thoughts on these chips?

Also, the V16 isn't affected by the laser problems of the previous models right? Are there any other risks of damaging the PS2 (assuming the mod goes well)? Cheers

    Sorry for the double post..

I've now confirmed that the SCPH-79002 will be modded with a MODBO 4.0

I don't know much about the MODBO, but if you're into programming and homebrew apps, then get the Matrix Infinity - Homebrew. The Crystal chip is also another very good mod chip. These chip have alot features, for convenience purposes, that older chip didn't have. Whichever chip you choose, find out and make sure it's not a clone (fake). A cloned chip will get damaged if you attempt to flash it, making your PS2 unbootable unless you remove the chip.

I also forgot to add, all models are affect. It doesn't matter what brand console it is, as long as a console is altered in a way, to work how it's not supposed to (modify), there will be risk. It not required, but I recommend installing a laser fix. It redirects unnecessary signals and reduces chances of laser burnout. Even then, it's not a guarantee laser fix will prevent the laser from burning out. The risk is entirely up to you to take. It's safer if you don't play games for hours and hours on end. If you do, since you have the slims, you should look into getting a external HDD and USBExtreme/USBAdvance or things of that sort to conserve laser life and store games.

Am I correct in thinking that a modchip can play more (larger variety) burnt games than Swap Magic?
Still deciding between the two and not sure what to get.
Modchip would void my warranty, and the PS2 would not be in it's original form anymore but it seems to have interesting features. Swap Magic is cheaper and doesn't change the PS2 permanently, but it seems that there are some problems running certain burnt backups.

Swap magic is fine, but I would be careful about your laser--especially with the slim models. This really doesn't have anything to do with swap magic though. Everytime you play a burnt disk you put a larger amount of stress on you laser then would be on a normal stamped ps2 or DVD disk.

First post here. Oh is it really? i did not know that, because all of my fiends kept telling me that a mochips is better because it allows u to play more games than a swap disc ever will. I am still not sure though, does "its fine" mean that both play the same amount of games? Also is it hard to solder a modchip? Do you need some time of pro experience, because i am just looking into this, but i think the chip im getting is a 4 wire one. I was going to get a 15 watt soldering iron, is that recommended? Also which chips are best, im looking into the chipmod and the DMS 4 products.

Also what types of modchips are the best ones, i dont mean in terms of compatibility, but the ones that play the most games, the latest version. I heard it was DMS 4 version, E.Z.I or something. I also heard this one is solderless, so that would be good for me as well. however is it hard to fix this one up? Also if this is the best modchip does anyone know a reliable store where i can get one, fast and cheap!??

I still don't know how Swap Magic compares to a dedicated mod chip....
I haven't made my mind up as yet, although I'd probably go for a mod chip for the sake of it.
