Considering purchasing a modchip in the near future, and was just wondering which you thought was the best.

I have heard some older poor chips don't play PS2 backups on DVD media, only the older games on CD-Rs.

    Help appreciated.

Sorry i have to start by saying the awnser to this question is so easy to find

Anyway depening on which ps2 you have some chips are better than others.I youst to have a neo key with dvd region x to boot and it only played cd-rom based games on top of having to change the disk. Then i got a messiah 2 installed professianly and it works flawlessly no swapping disks and boots nearly every good backup i chuck in so very pleased.

so i would say any quality chip will do (dms3,messiah2 or a magic)if installed properly
and i will only reccomend these direct boot chips as changing the disk is a pain in the ass

It is so easy to find the best modchip ?

I was browsing a site which had those modchips that u mentioned, but was just wondering if there was a certain chip that was a step in front of the rest, or rated highly by members of this forum with more knowledge of this particular topic than me.

Edit: Which Magic would you recommend ? I can see Magic 3.1 ($19.00) or Magic 2 ($42.00) and the MagicV is not yet in stock. Is Magic 3.1 an earlier chip or summin' ? _X_X_X_X_X_[small]Abit NF7-S V2.0 Mobo

again i would reccomend the messiah 2 from my own experience but as i said it depends on which version of ps2 you have some chips are compatable with older versions of ps2 and some for newer like the magicV i think is for versions 5 and above anyway try checking out this thread

i dont think you need a modchip to play backups online if the modchip you have plays your backups then they should work online as long as your ps2 is connected to broadband internet (i think)

[bold]you can not play backups online if you have a mod chip installed, unless you put the chip to sleep mode and use the originals.

It depends on what you want from your PS2 and what version PS2 you have. Magic mods for instance sometimes don't work well with unpactched games, while the Messiah 2 will read everything as it has a prepatcher built into it's code. The Magic 3.1 and Magic V won't work with a brand new 5000x models anyway. The Ripper 2's are very good especially for the 5000x models as they have less wires and are easier to install, plus they are flashable and you can run DivX player with them. The only one to avoid if you don't want to swap disc is the Neo 2.2, but they are pretty old now anyway.
