What's the best format to use on youtube? They recommend 320x240, and I uploaded a video, under 100 megs, with a 720x480 resolution, .avi format and I'm sure they changed the format and the resolution cause it looks like crap and loads super fast. So, how do I make a video so that they don't modify it?
Ignoring their recommendations seems rather counter-productive. I'm sure, have you ever seen a 720x480 YouTube vid or one that wasn't in Adobe Flash? From their recently-updated FAQ: What's the best format to upload for high quality? We recommend the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 320x240 resolution with MP3 audio. Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your clips look better on YouTube.
I've uploaded about 200 videos across various youtube channels. WMV files seem to uL with no quality loss. Also, try to keep your bitrate high (about 1Mbps - 2Mbps) even though flv files are only 200 bits per second. Mpeg-2 files come out like total sh** because of the interlacing. MP4 files far much better. I haven't tried to uL a file from real media (REAL sucks anyway). Stage 6 @divx.com and dailymotion.com have higher qual results. You might want to check them out too. YouTube is not the only game in town one more thing. Experiment with the program SUPER using various formats & bitrates. Make a note of which settings used for which video. Upload each to your account & eyeball them to find the best one. I can say without a doubt that if you have noise or interlacing on a video on your PC, it still will look bad online. A home movie will come out much better if you post-process it on your computer using Virtual Dub or SUPER, then uL to youtube.
So if I upload a video under 100 megs with a 320x240 resolution, in .avi format and mp3 audio they won't touch it and leave it as it is? it's weird because I just uploaded an 80 meg .avi file with those specifications and although it takes longer to load, is not even close to how much it would take to load a 100 meg file. And the picture still looks much worse than the original.

every video you upload to youtube is converted into flv format.. so if you dont want them to touch it you should upload your video in flv format..
