Hello i was just wandering if anyone can help me with the following.I have a ASUS A7V8X-X mob which has 2 ide ports on it.I have 2 hard drives on one port on master and slave. On the other port i have 2 dvd writers master and slave again.I would like to fit my cdr drive to save it going to waste.I know you can purchase ide cable which will attach to 3 drives but heres my questions.
1.Is this the Best way to fit it.
2.What setting would i put it to if master and slave are already in use.
3.What effect on my pc would it have.

    Thanks

Unless something magical has happened and PATA is making a comeback... no such cable exists... dont forget the third plug goes into the mobo (or controller)

No you are the man as iam writing re another thread to you.Your answering my question to my problem. However the cable they supply on my local computer fair includes 4 in total which includes the one that actually plugs in to the ide port.I just wondered if they worked.

Making the assumption that your DVD burners will also burn and read CD-R's and CD-RW discs, it makes no sense whatsoever to try to attach a CD-R drive to the mix.

If you really want to do that, get a Promise card.

The reason for this is beacuase it is a dedicated cdr burner. One thing i forgot to check when purchaseing both dvd writer if they will burn 90mins cdr.I do not mind the drop in speed as the fastest i can burn cds with the dvd witers is 40xspeed as to my cdr 52xspeed.The main reason is the 90min thing + i do not want to see it go to waste.Considering all the time i have had it ive burned about 10cds and would not get half the price back i purchased it for.

Let's not forget that (a) not all dvd burners are 2-sheep cd burners and (b) one wants to make game backups it becomes neccesary to have a cd burner

Always had bad luck with them (Promise) myself but there's also Highpoint :)

Can you please tell me what a promise card is as i have not a clue. The cdr drive is not really for anything inparticular. But as it is there why waste it if i can use it.As far as iam concerned cdr will soon become something of the past like the old vinal Lp.All console games are now on dvd and pc games are going the same way.But if you have something worth saveing you do not always discard.

Best thing to do is buy a ATA Hard Disk Controller Card. This will allow you to put up to Eight (8) IDE Devices into your comptuer.

This card plugs into a PCI slot, and gives you two more channels.

Depends on what wattage your power supply is, is to if it can handle all the drives....

But, you can Buy Power Splitters, that will split 1 Power molex into 2.

What wattage is your powersupply ?

You need to factor in the wattage your other components are drawing.

    P4/Athlon XP/A64 - 60-90 watts

    Motherboard - 20-30 watts

    RAM 20 watts per 256MB

    PCI card - 5-10 watts

    AGP video card - 20 - 50 watts

    Hard drive - 5-20 watts

    Optical drive - 10 -20 watts

Tally up what you have running and be sure to leave yourself a generous headroom such as 30% or so for the large power spike when you first power up your PC and everything starts up at once :)

I forgot about them not all being 2-sheep. I have a Promise card that works great. I also have a Highpoint that I would give away. It is a RocketRaid 1540. I found it to be a piece of junk. :)

I'm also running 480, so using Nehpilim's guide above I have room to grow. Thanks

I have bought just a five plug IDE cable and connected as many drives as I found on the street. It can work with some problems. I don't think this was answered so I am going into it. These cables are varly slow and can messup the computer detection for primary. Also it really depends on what your Bios can suport for drives connected. Other wise you could just connect the Hard drive in a raid or use on of the cards suggested.
Neph, is on the ball. You need to add up all the sources and make sure you are ok. But with a 400 watt you might be ok. Also make sure to add up your tech toys on the outlet. A lot of people blow the house wireing not thinking about the drain on one outlet.

And tell your wife to join, then she can talk to you any time. :p
