Big changes on their way!

I found this article, and although I dont know what the full implications will be, it surely cant be good.

There will always be new technology and hackers to pick at wholes in there systems....

No need to panic, and plus, if virgin does decide to carry this out, it will cost an awful lot :-/

If theres a will theres a way.... Remember its coming up for christmas, virgin bosses know its the time of year people watch TV most. There just trying to put people of using these boxes, and to scare them away, so people will pay for there service.

 

not to worry, i'm sure there will be another 'box' that will come out that will be 'compatable' with cable suppliers.

whatever the box is useless then.....but if they do it it will stretch the broadband to the limits, what is not doog to whatever Virgin customer...but who cares?

And it as mentioned before it will cost them awfully lot of money.... but do they get more subscribers?..... I seriously doubt

 

I have tried clicking on the above link but it wont open the page so don't know what its on about. But after reading the reply's and people stating it would cost them a lot of money to do whatever it is surely they would get a lot of it back if people then had to subscribe to receive their services. If whatever is in that link is stating that the boxes will become useless if people then sign up to vm then they will recover a lot of the cost wont they?

 

Cable tv has always been easily hacked since the early eighties! I remember when comcast was on the go, people wolud cancel their subscription, the men would come and disconnect you, and when they were gone people would just reconnect themselves!! Thats why they went bust. On the other hand s*y cards were readily available in the nineties, but they done something to stop that. They are still around. Sometimes it takes major investment to change things, but if vm want to here in 10yrs, maybe this is what they are thinking of...

 

If this comes to pass, everyone will have had their good use out of their box so there really shouldn't be any complaints.

VM has to do some MAJOR investment to get this plan in motion and in this current economic climate, I would be a bit dubious that they can raise the money from investors without some hassle.

To everyone here with a 'dodgy' box that would become useless after the upgrade by VM, start putting by some of the money you're saving in monthly payments aside to fund that new box

I don't know what you are getting concerned about.

This was always going to happen. As part of the nationwide analogue TV switch off ( which all broadcasters are doing ) Virgin are making all their transmissions to be HD compliant. This is not going to result in new receivers except for those wanting to take advantage of the HD signal.
The main advantage is the bandwidth that becomes free on the network which could lead to the 100mbit broadband lines they have been hinting at for a couple of years.

 

this has already happened in certain parts of Ireland without any inconviniece ... Nothing to worry about on this at all!!!

 

100meg Broadband, Pasanonic are you sure?. I have heard of the 50meg but not 100???.

 

Yeah. 50mb is being trialled up the road from me now and my 20mb will automatically go up to that as soon as it is rolled nationwide early next year I believe.
100mbit domestic broadband has always been the aim of NTL and I've seen press releases and had conversations with NTL about it in the past.
They are getting more bandwidth free all the time. The 50mb upgrade was meant to be 30mb but they skipped it.
The problem VM are having is not freeing up the pipes ( they could give us all 100mbit right now ) it's what people do with the bandwidth when they have it. And the more that people clog up the stream with BitTorrent data the worse it gets for those of us that genuinely need more bandwidth for moving huge chunks of data around as part of legitimate business.

 

100 mbit broadband . Yep it's true. VM are planning 100 mbit sooner rather than later and is slated to remain a key objective in their 5 year plan

 

I wonder how quickly VM will impose their traffic shaping policies on both the 50mb and 100mb users lol

Possible new policy on the VM table ... cut everyone's speed to 25% of the advertised and claim that it's nothing to do with them lol
