I have gone through the faqs and tutorials on this and other sites. I have done everything I am supposed to but near the end of the process I am having problems. Well really just one problem, I used DVD decrypter to put the dvd on my hardrive. Then it says there should be a file with the .dvd end, but mine don't have that ending. I have two files one is only 5 Kb the other is the huge file 8,000,000 Kb or something. But it ends in .iso and its icon is the winrar icon. When I click on it, I am taken to the winrar screen and I am given the option of what to extract. If any of you can help I would greatly appreciate it, I don't know if I need to extract something or if I did something wrong when I transfered it to the hard drive, as I said any help would be greatly appreciated.
you dont say what software you are using. decrypter wont burn this file as it is way too big for a 4.7gb dvd. come back with a little more info and we'll be able to help. best three software packages to have are DVD Decrypter (though not needed very often) DVD Shrink and nero. shrink is free to download and you will be able to download a free demo copy of nero if you dont already have it. welcome to the fold viper
Sorry for not giving all accurate info, I used dvd decrypter, and the iso file was only 4.07 GB so it should fit on one dvd. I also just tried burning the iso file to a dvd to see what would happen and it gave me a message saying that the file had 400,000 sectors, and the disc only had 250,000, what does that mean? I am sorry if I am confusing people, I am super tired and my brain went to sleep an hour ago. Thanks to everyone in these forums I have never got such good advice from any other forum.
Sounds like you have the iso file on your harddrive. That's good. Check the file size. If it's less than 4.3 GB or so, DVDDecrypter can burn it to disc directly. From the pulldown menues in DVDDecrypter, select "Mode, ISO, Write". It'll let you select the source file (your ripped DVD), and the destination (your burner). Put a good, high quality blank DVD in the burner, and click the icon at the bottom left of DVDDecrypter to start. If the ripped file is larger than 4.3 GB or so, use DVD Shrink (Viper6699 is right, it's a great all purpose program). Shrink will let you strip out "stuff" that you don't want, like language or subtitle options. It will then automatically (or manually, if you desire) resize the ripped file to fit on one 4.7 GB disc. It's super easy to use. Next step would be to burn the disc. DVD Shrink can work directly with Nero (Viper6699 gave you a link for Nero), or you can use any burning software you may already have. (Shrink has the capability of storing the shrunken DVD in a file on your harddrive). Hope that helps! Let us know.
Hello pooface, You are providing us with plenty of information. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done with an ISO file except burn it to disc. DVD Shrink cannot do anything to an ISO file. It is good for burning ONLY ! The fact that it is too big means that you should just delete it. Sorry, but it's not good for anything :-( We're going to start over but it will be fast and painless. The hardest thing is setting up the programs the first time but, I'm going to give you all the answers - Here we go, step by step - it can’t fail. First create a folder for your HD backup. Try to put it someplace where you won’t forget it (i.e. C:/My movie Name). Next download DVD Decrypter and under mode select ISO write. Un-tick the box that says “verify”. Where it says “source”, you’ll put in that folder you created on your HD. Lastly where it says Destination, put in the drive where your burner resides. Decrypter - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm Download DVD Shrink. Open it and click “Edit”, and then click “Preferences” under the “File I/O Tab” un-tick “Enable burning with Nero” then click “OK”. DVD Shrink - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm - Put your original DVD in your drive. Click "Open Disc". Wait until Shrink’s analyzing is finished then “click” Backup. Now, take just a second and under “Target Device” go to “Select target device” once there, select “ISO Disc Image”. [bold]NEXT[/bold] tick “Launch DVD Decrypter to burn the output image” box. Finally, where it says “Select target image file”, browse till you find your created folder for your Backup and place it there, That’s it ! Click “OK” and DVD Shrink burns that ISO image there on your HD. Decrypter will then burn your blank disc - that’s it ! Don’t use your PC for anything at all while it’s working and DO USE Ritek G04 discs or Verbatim discs. Cheap disc might not work. 2ndsun256: Shrink will do its magic on an ISO file stored on its hard drive. From the pulldown menus (not the icons, but the words), select "File, Open Disc Image". Then browse to the file you want to "shrink" Once there, compress, cut... do whatever Shrink options you want to do. ScubaPete: No disrespect meant. Your post is thorough, and easy to follow as always. You've helped me much.
The reason you have one huge file is because you are doing a Mirror Image of the DVD to the Hard Disk, a one to one copy. The fact that one of them is a .RAR Icon is because Windows (I Assume) in it's imfinite wisdom has associated that file type with WinRar. When you load DVD Decrypter set the mode to File instead of .ISO that way you will have all the individual .Vob files on the drive, this sounds like it is what you are after. Now I use DVD2ONE - personally I think the end result is higher quality, some people will disagree, shrink is however better in two ways, it's free and it has that excellent preview window, makes it simpler to remove what you don't need. Best bet is to just dump everything apart from the main feature and soundtrack. This way the average 90min film will probably drop onto a blank DVD without any compression, just grab all the decoded files and dump them in the VIDEO_TS folder in Nero. Also this way if the film is say 2 or 3 hours you have the max space on the DVD available, this means less compression and better quality. If you Burn the .ISO you are going to be compressing 7,8,9 or more Gb of data to 4.7 and the end result will suffer. _X_X_X_X_X_[small]I don't know what I am doing.[/small]
Packfan, Forgot about the pull down from "File". You can also use a virtual drive to put the ISO on then rip it from there. Pete PS There are professional programs that allow one to work within an ISO but I doubt too many here have them. (Yes I know some of you do have them but not "Old" ScubaPete) _X_X_X_X_X_[small]The “old man” Pete (ö¿ô) Compaq 8000, Pent 4 CPU 2.84GHz, 1GB RAM. 340GB HD, 7200 (Maxtor 120, Western 200 & 20. 4 Drives, JLMS DVD ROM, HP DVD Writer 200j, Nec 4X DVD RW ND-1300A & AXV CD/DVD-ROM.
