First I think this is the right place to post this.

On to my problem. I have a DVD drive in my computer, supports DVD+R and -R, can write onto DVD, rip DVDs, copy them, burn etc. All that stuff.

However in some cases when I put in a perfectly working DVD in my drive *nothing* happens! I have many DVD related software, and could this be a bug from Nero or something? >: (

Also, my DVD drive doesn't even show on "My Computer" (currently)

Just my HDD, floppy drive, virtual drive (Alcohol 120%) and that's it. No DVD/CD Drive!

What is going on here? Any ideas?

It sounds exactly like the same problem I'm experiencing. My burner won't recognize any dvd discs and neither will the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM will, however, recognize data discs.

The last time I came across this problem, someone form this forum recommended that I do a "disk check" which solved the problem. (I was a happy camper).... I've had no problems until now. It happened again. Only this time, the disc-check process doesn't seem to help.

To Do a disk-check: click Start --> right click on hard drive (C)--> click properties --> tools --> error checking. Click both boxes. Depending on how much you have on your computer, the process took about an hour. Try and see if this will address your issue.
I'm still trying to solve mine.

Well this is the weird thing. It only happened once. usually all the time (and right now) my DVD drive is there and it recognises (some) discs. For eg. my DVD player recognises both discs but my PC disc drive would only recognises one (and these discs are burnt successfully from my own PC yet it doesn't even recognises the disc(s) it has burnt itself half the time)

no error messages. anyway I'll try that rescuedog (Seems like I have the worst luck when it comes to DVDs)

Well ... it seems like I've been able to resolve my problem. My DVD burner now recognizes dvd discs. I'm not exactly sure what I did, but something must've worked. Now, it's a matter of hoping it'll continue to work.

If there's one thing I've learned about computer problems related to dvd burning is that everything and ANYthing can cause problems. I'm a novice but have learned through trial and error that there isn't one quick fix for a problem. Even the Advanced folks are finding problems because there are no standard protocols and everyone uses different hard/software systems.

Having 'lost' my dvd burner a couple of times before, I've also learned to pay attention to exactly what I did that was different than normal. Including new software installation. However, even a restore couldn't solve this recent problem.

As for my recent fix? .....
I use Nero and Roxio. I uninstalled Roxio because I understand they both conflict with each other (and re-installed Roxio again). I also performed a disk-check again, including deframenting. My burner and CD-ROM seem to be working now.

Another thing I'll be paying attention to which may/may not be causing this problem .... I've been using a new Sony dvd recorder. This could've been a culprit as well ... who knows.

Yup, the wonders of DVD burning. Of course back in the days when I was a newbie, I thought you burn, you pop the disc in, it plays and you enjoy. But there's so much more to it XD ~~Ooohhh It is exlirating! XD

    Restore Missing CD Drive.
    Win XP ONLY!

The popular CDGONE patch. CD drives may vanish in Windows Explorer, Device Manager, etc. if a third-party CD-burning package has been uninstalled and Registry references for some code modules aren’t removed successfully. This patch and a reboot usually will restore the missing drives. Any third party package still required will then have to be re-installed. For more information on this and other possible causes, see the “Problems” section of Alex Nichol’s Burning CDs in Windows XP article.

Drag & Drop Fix. Win 2000, Win XP
Has repaired the very few cases of lost drag-and-drop ability we’ve encountered so far in Windows XP, and has also worked in Windows 2000. Don’t confuse this with the Win9x version — there are small differences in the Registry structures involved.

    XP Icon Repair. Win XP

Some users (very few) have reported that installation and use of XP PowerToys causes desktop icons to revert to older (pre-XP) forms. When this occurs, the cause is corruption of Registry keys which this patch repairs.

    Disable CD AutoRun.
    Enable CD AutoRun.

This is the fastest way to turn AutoRun on or off if the usual methods aren’t working for you. Useful for solving a variety of woes. “Win-XP safe”

Restore JPEG Preview capability in Explorer.

JPEG preview capability is sometimes lost. This file stands a good chance of restoring it in Win 95/98. (It has worked in WinME & Win 2000 too.) “Win-XP safe”
WARNING: This patch resets the JPEG program association to the Windows default, wiping out any custom associations. This has been the most successful JPEG Preview patch for many people, but does have this side-effect. Edit the file in Notepad to see instructions on removing this characteristic.

Thank you for the reference to the CDGONE patch, though it's a little over my head.

If I understood correctly, this patch is suppose to address CD drives that "vanish". I'm not sure this is the problem I encountered. The drives show that they exist on my computer. However, when I insert a disc in the drives, there's "nothing" there. In other words, the drives don't recognize the discs. (Is this the same thing as saying that a drive "vanished?) .... Sorry for these questions, I'm new to all of this and learning the ropes.

Also .... I could not find the link you were referring to:
    (ireland 24. July 2006 @ 12:12 Link) .... How do I look for it?
    Thanks

Was replying to Lemnguying thread since his was vanishing. rescuedog my computers won't function with both Roxio and Nero on them. Also make sure Neros incd isn't on there. I don't know if the 2 progs are conflicting or not , but my experience with both progs on mine it's like having 2 mother in laws under the same roof.If it was me I'd try uninstalling Roxio and Roxio Zapper and run just Nero and see what happens. ...... "it's like having 2 mother in laws under the same roof" .... HA! This says it all! And here I thought it was my new dvd recorder (Sony) that was the culprit.

So Nero and Roxio conflict? I suspected as much.
What's "Nero incd"? Is that one of their programs?

Any idea where I can get Roxio zapper and what is it? .... Is it an uninstall program?

I prefer Roxio for some of its options, while I use Nero for others. I suppose if I were to continue using both, they'll have to be 2 different systems.

I'm using Nero 7. When attempting to modify/remove the programs, I noticed that IN CD was "X-out", meaning it doesn't exist?
When I did a complete install, I wondered if they purposely left it out for the reasons you've mentioned.

Sorry out of my league, I had Nero 6 oem installed on my computer. The place where I purchased installed the InCD packet, which I had to remove.

Yep on Nero 7 they do have it shaded because of problems. I'll dig up the Roxio Zapper for you. Chris

    I'm sorry .... I must've missed it somewhere.
What's Roxio Zapper and what does it do?
    Thanks for your help.

BTW: .... On a previous occassion, my Burner and CD-ROM stopped recognizing discs when I was attempting to burn a disc when my storage was almost filled to capacity. There wasn't enough space even for store temp files. I ended up having to rebuild my system (A big lesson there!) ..... Don't forget to delete folders and free up your space!

Zapper removes all traces of Roxio from your system gave to Lemngying to try just Nero to see if Roxio and Nero are conflicting with each other. Chris
