my box is a captive works 600s is there anything i should do different.i am waiting for you to send me the files you said thank you
I will be gone until late tonight. I don't know if I will be back on later or not. I have a long drive ahead of me. The Complete CW600S How To I have to thank all the people who have written and compiled all the previous How To's because the bulk of my learning experience has come directly from their threads. Thanks to mrokarvi, fun4me, skittles, and Captive Works. Without your experience, understanding, and patience, countless numbers of people would be stuck wondering how to fix their STB's. ABSOLUTELY FIRST AND FOREMOST Captive Works Released 2 versions of the CW600S, a standard receiver and a Premium receiver. THIS HOW TO IS ONLY FOR STANDARD RECEIVERS! Loading any standard receiver files to your premium receiver can possibly damage the receiver beyond repair. To identify what type of receiver you have, look at the front panel on the right hand side of the receiver. You should see the CaptiveWorks logo followed by CW-600S. If you have a PREMIUM receiver, then you will see the word PREMIUM under the CW-600S. If the word PREMIUM is not found on the front right side of the receiver then you have a standard receiver and you can continue with rest of the How To. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! If you do not have the proper cable, then no amount of setting changes or software will allow you to download the updates you need. The serial cable you need is called a Null Modem Serial Cable. This cable uses the serial comm port on your computer. Most websites provide the correct cable with the purchase of a receiver. If you did not receive one of these cables when you purchased your receiver then they can be purchased at your local RadioShack, Best Buy, or Circuit City as well as numerous online sites including several of the site sponsors. I do not recommend using the serial cable from another receiver or device unless you absolutely positive that it is as Null Modem Serial Cable. The other common type of cable is a simple straight through serial cable like what is used with the Fortec and Pansat receivers. The cables look the same but have internal differences. FILES Once you have ensured that you have the correct cable, you need to download several files from the site. Each of the following links contain software critical to properly updating your receiver. DOWNLOAD ALL OF THE FOLLOWING SOFTWARE EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU WILL EVER USE IT. Summer 06 OSD update. This file contains two loader software versions (V1.04 and V1.05) from Captive Works as well as the new OSD bin files (CX_KroundV1.06_24138Chip.bin and CX-LoaderV2.50.bin). NEW OSD FACTORY BIN Because of the OSD changes during the Summer of 2006, once you update your receiver with the previous files, you cannot revert to the previous OSD using the original factory software. The following link is the V1.14 factory bin. Installing this software will convert the receiver back to factory standards while removing the ability to de-scramble channels. With this bin installed on the receiver, you will only be able to pick up true FTA channels. MOST RECENT SOFTWARE UPDATE Most of the users on this site are here for this software. These updates are software updates that are not supported by Captive Works. These updates allow the receivers to use DN and BEV channels. This is done through hexidecimal "Keys". The software updates make the receiver capable of using these "Keys" while usually automatically updating the key information for you. This feature is called Auto Roll. At the time of this writing, the most current software update was "CW600SV1.34_08042007.bin". From here on out, these updates will be referred to as "bin files". You will need to check the FILES ONLY section for the CW600S Standard to know which file you need. When new updates are available, these are usually the first sticky at the top of the page. Once all files are downloaded, extract to a folder and separate into sub folders. You will be glad you did this later. THE UPDATE PROCESS This process is one that can be found in many places in the forums. MrOkarvi has a How To that contains this information. This Process has been worded to include a more detailed process. FOR A BRAND NEW (VIRGIN) RECEIVER If you have a receiver that is brand new, straight out of the box, never been updated, then you absolutely must update the OSD using the Summer 06 files downloaded previously. Once those files have been properly loaded, you should never have to load them again. Make sure that the files from the first archive you downloaded (NEW_CW600_OS1.06.zip or NEW_CW600_OS1.06.rar) have been unzipped into a folder where you know the location. The archive contains a program called CW f2atv_com v1.04_plusUSB.exe. Despite the name, you cannot load software onto the receiver with a USB to serial cable. The first file that you need to load MUST be done using a standard serial port on your computer. You need to connect the receiver to the computer. Make sure the power is turned off from the front. On the receiver, press and hold the Power button on the front of the receiver while turning the unit on from the rear via the toggle switch. (This will be referred to as boot mode) Open the V1.04 Loader Click the yellow folder icon and locate the fileCX_KroundV1.06_24138Chip.bin If the button beside Download S/W is not already selected, click on it. NOTE: You will need to determine which COM port you are using. The serial port on most computers is usually COM port 1. The software defaults to COM 1 at startup so this should already be selected. Click the Start Button. NOTE: You should now see a yellow progress bar. Depending upon the settings on your computer and the ammount of resources you have available, this should take between 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. If your progress bar remains at zero, you will need to stop the transfer and check your settings. The most common problem when using a serial port to transfer data is an improper port setting in the software. NOTE: If you plan on using a USB to Serial Cable later in the process to update your receiver, it would be a good idea to not only note the serial port COM number but the USB to serial cable Com number as well. Make sure that before proceeding, you install the USB to Serial Cable. NOTE: To check the port settings for your serial port, you will need to open the Device Manager. Click Start, then Run. Type devmgmt.msc. This will open the Device Manager. Click "Ports (COM & LPT)". This should now show all available ports on the computer. (USB cable users need to write down the port number for both the standard serial port and the USB cable.) Change the settings in the loader software to match the port number that you are using and try again. (For more help check the Troubleshooting section.) Once the transfer finishes, you should see "-End" on the receiver LCD screen and the progress bar on the software will have returned to zero. After the bin has loaded, close the V1.04 software and turn the receiver off. Open the V1.05 software. Click the yellow folder icon and locate CX-LoaderV2.50.bin Make sure that the "Download S/W" button is selected. Change to the same COM port you just used for V1.04 (COM 1 should already be selected.) Put the receiver into boot mode. Click the "Start Button" on the loader software. NOTE: You should now see a yellow progress bar. Depending upon the settings on your computer and the ammount of resources you have available, this should take between 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. If your progress bar remains at zero, you will need to stop the transfer and check your settings then try again. Once the transfer finishes, you should see "-End" on the receiver LCD screen and the progress bar on the software will have returned to zero. You need to verify that the software was properly loaded. Turn the receiver off and back on. Depending on whether or not you have ever set this receiver up, you may have to do the quick setup before proceding. Select your language and then OK through the rest until it says "Scan Channels". Completely exit the menus. Press menu on the receiver remote. Go to Accessories Go to About STB. You should see the Kround Version Number and the CX Loader Version Number If you have Kround V1.06 and CX Loader V2.50, then you have properly loaded the software. You are now able to update your box with the newest working software. From here out, you can use a USB to Serial Cable to load software to the receiver. If you choose to use a USB cable for the rest of the updating process, please check the USB to Serial Cable How To, and ensure that your settings are correct and that your cable is working before proceeding. If you are using a serial cable connected to a serial port, the same COM settings you have used prior to this will work for all future updates. Properly Loading New Bins Thanks again to skittles for testing this method. The following method for loading the receiver is exactly the same as the step by step instructions found in the HOW TO thread labled "The Best Way To Load A CW600S Regular With Kround Software Allready Installed" found here I have changed the wording to include a more detailed process. If you have not done so already, download and unzip the latest software update from the FILES SECTION here First you need to do a "Factory Default" Turn the unit on. Press Menu on the remote. Press OK on "Installation" Scroll down to "Factory Default. Click OK Select "ALL" Confirm the Factory Default Put the receiver into boot mode. (USB cable users MUST put the unit into standby mode. This done by simply turning the unit off from the remote or power switch on the FRONT.) Open the V1.05 Software. Click the Yellow Folder I con and locate the New OSD Factory Bin V1.14. (If you have not downloaded it, it can be found here. Select "Download S/W" Select the COM port that your cable is connected to. Click "Start" NOTE: You should now see a yellow progress bar. Depending upon the settings on your computer and the ammount of resources you have available, this should take between 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. If your progress bar remains at zero, you will need to stop the transfer, check your settings and try again. Once the unit has finished loading the factory software, turn the unit off and back on from the rear switch. Do a Factory Default as described before. Put the unit into boot mode (Standby mode for USB users) On the V1.05 loader click the yellow folder icon Find and select the newest receiver software update. Click Start NOTE: You should now see a yellow progress bar. Depending upon the settings on your computer and the ammount of resources you have available, this should take between 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. If your progress bar remains at zero, you will need to stop the transfer and check your settings. Once the unit has finished loading the factory software, turn the unit off and back on from the rear switch. Do a Factory Default as described earlier. Once you have finished the Factory Default, your box is updated but you still have a few things to do. You will need to change the antenna settings for your specific setup and scan your satellites for channels. Once you have properly adjusted the settings for your antenna setup and scanned your channels, you will need to ENABLE THE PATCH. If you do not enable the patch, then the update you just did will be no good to you. TO ENABLE THE PATCH PRESS F1 (WHITE KEY) ON THE REMOTE FOLLOWED BY THREE ZEROS. When you press F1 on the remote, the LCD on the receiver will display an H and then the numbers you press. If you did it correctly, there will be a message on the screen to the right that says "Patch Enabled". Allow the receiver to sit on a channel for a few minutes. This will allow it to "Roll the Key". Once the proper key has been "rolled", a "Key Update" message will be displayed that shows which keys were changed and what the new keys are. LONG CHANNEL NAMES After having used this receiver for awhile, most people will agree that it would be nice to have the EPG show the actual channel name rather than a shortened version (PPV) or the station call sign (WMYT). There is an option in the system settings that will allow you to turn on or off the Bell&Dishnet Full Names. This option only works however, if you load the proper files onto the receiver to give it the information to replace those channels names. You need to download the following file and remove the two files it contains from the archive. This file will eventually become outdated so watch the CW600S Standard files section for updates. To load these files you will need to use the V1.05 Loader Software. Put the receiver in boot mode (standby mode for USB cable users) Open the V1.05 Loader Software Click the yellow folder icon You will need to use file that is named the same as the network you are picking up. If you are using DN then you will need to load the file that is labeled Jez_CW600s_Dish_LongNameFix.bin If you are using BEV then you will need to load the file that is labeled Jez_CW600s_Bev_LongNameFix.bin Locate and Select the file that corresponds to your setup. Click Download S/W Change the COM port to match the port you are using. Click Start NOTE: You should now see a yellow progress bar. Depending upon the settings on your computer and the ammount of resources you have available, this should take between 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. If your progress bar remains at zero, you will need to stop the transfer and check your settings. Once the software has finished loading the new file, turn the receiver off and then back on from the back. Press the Menu button on the receiver remote. Select System Setting and Press OK Select System and Press OK Select Bell&Dish Full Name Press the Left or Right button on the remote until the word ON shows beside Bell&Dish Full Name. NOTE: If you use both DN and BEV, then you will need to repeat the process using the file that you have not used. Exit out of the Menu Press the EPG button and look through the channel names. You should notice a difference. If nothing has changed then repeat the process and ensure that the Bell&Dish Full Name is turned on after you load the software. CW100-R The CW100-R is probably the best thing you could ever do for your receiver. This unit will record TV programs from your receiver without the need for Video Cassettes or DVDs. As a digital video recorder, this unit is capable of being setup to record specific programs using the EPG of the CW600S receiver. It is also capable of playback of other video files which you can transfer from your computer. The last of the greatest features of this unit is the fact that you can update the receiver with a USB thumb drive while the PVR is connected. THIS UNIT REQUIRES A STRAIGHT THROUGH SERIAL CABLE TO CONNECT IT TO THE RECEIVER. THE CABLE USED TO UPDATE THE RECEIVER WILL NOT WORK FOR CONNECTING THESE UNITS. Schedule a Recording from the EPG Open the EPG Highlight a program that you wish to record. Press the green button on the remote. Ensure all the information displayed is correct. Press OK If the program that you selected in the future, the channel will automatically change to the correct channel at the time selected and start recording. If the program you selected is currently on then the channel will change immediately and start recording. UPDATING THE RECIEVER VIA USB THUMBDRIVE Download the most recent update. Rename the file to SETUPBOX.bin Save SETUPBOX.bin to a USB thumbdrive Put the receiver in Standby mode Open the menu on the CW100-R Select Play File Find the File on the USB thumb drive labeled SETUPBOX.bin and press OK TROUBLESHOOTING If you have trouble with your receiver the there are a few steps you should take before asking for help in the forums. Usually small problems, like no audio, video or scrambled channels, can be solved by a reboot. Turn the receiver off and back on from the rear of the receiver. For scrambled channel problems, if a reboot does not work, make sure that the patch is enabled. Open the menu, go to accessories. If it says Key Menu at the bottom then the patch is enabled, if it does not, then you need to enable the patch. Press F1 then 000 to enable the patch. If the patch is enabled and you have tried a reboot, then wait for 15 minutes to allow the keys to roll. If you are having problems loading an update, check and be sure of two things, the file is a CW600S Standard File and recheck your settings. Go back through the procedures for the update you are trying and make sure that you have followed them step by step.
