My buddy is going to buy a PS3 and a Plasma LCD/720p. When he plays a Blu-Ray disc, he wants to know what is the output of the Blu-Ray disc/Plasma 720p?

The highest resolution he will get is 720p, Even if the ps3 outputs 1080p, your tv will downscale it to 720p.

Is your buddy sure its a 720P native TV?
I would guess it will probably be better than that at either 1080i or more recently 1080P capable. Regardless, Most Bluray disks are in 1080P format but will be scaled down by the TV to its native resolution. The reccommended HD resolution for my LCD is 1920 x 1080 so thats what I send it from my PC but I know that the Actual native resolution of the set is 1366 x 768 and this is therefore the maximum resolution the panel will be showing me.
The Native resolution of the latest 1080P panels is 1920 x 1080.
Any resolution be it lower or higher can only be displayed in the panels native resolution.
The most common flat panel native res is 1366 x 768 because it was decided by industry as the most suitable widescreen res to accomodate both SD transmissions (lower res) and be able to display HD resolutions at Higher Res.
