How can I find out if my DVD+/-R burner is capable of booktyping? I backup my DVD movies using shrink and it has an option for booktyping but I'm not sure if my burner is compatible.

    P.S. - I have the SONY DRX-530UL

If your option to booktype when burning with DVD Shrink is grayed out then it is not capable of booktyping, if you can check and uncheck the box before burning then your burner is capable to booktype your discs to DVD-ROM.

    haza12d is sorta right............
Even if your burner is capable of booktyping (and I [bold]THINK[/bold] it is), the booktype option will be greyed out, if you're using a -R blank. Booktyping [bold]ONLY[/bold] works with +R, +RW, & +R DL blanks.
Here is info on booktyping, and how to do it.....

    Good luck! Keep us posted?

I don't know if that sony has the bitsetting capability to booktype. Some sony drives do: 700A/710A/800A and a couple slim drives like the 56?

The sony drives that are capable, can use a separate utility from Lite-on. Those drives are re-badged liteys. I couldn't find the 530UL in that list sony- rebadged liteys.

There's may be a hacked firmware for it. Cdfreaks.com has a lot more info on those hacked FW for booktyping.

Thanks for the info, the option to booktype on shrink is grey'ed out for both +R and -R so my burner is not compatible.

Any recommendations on compatible burners, I know everybody's opinion varies a little bit but are there any sureshot brands or model numbers that I can look into. I keep seeing the name Benqt (something like that) pop up. Is that like the Taiyo Yuden of burners?

Get a BenQ DW1655... I just recently got one and am very pleased with it. It booktypes and is a very high quality burner.

Actually Plextor would be the Taiyo Yuden of dvd-rw drives. But even their PX-740 are rebadged Benq 1640s!!

Plextor px 116 would be the top of the line. Somewhere around $120-$140

The PX-740a runs about $70 or so?

    Plextor can booktype,using plextools.

I'm a devoted Benq user, but in their 1600 series like the 1620/1640/1650/and 1655. These babies will booktype. Nero can set the booktype on the 1620. Qsuite 2.0 sets the booktype for the 1640. The 1655 and 1650 are suppose to booktype out of the box,but you can use qsuite 2.0.

Benqs range between $40-$60. I got my 1640 at newegg.com for $37 including fed ex. I'd stay away from the DQ-60 with the dvd-ram.

You can use that sony as a reader, and burn with your new burner.Saves a lot of wear and tear on your new burner.

Lite-on/LG/Some sony/ricoh are some other brands that booktype. I'm not sure which model#'s are better than others.

    @saugmon
Hey there, just wondering how you booktype to DVD-ROM using plextools for the PX740A. I'm running plextools and the option to "change booktype for DVD+R" is greyed out. Maybe I don't have the firmware up to date?

Nevermind...just got done crossflashing the 740 to the 1640, now I have QSuite and can now booktype my +Rs, and the best thing is, I don't have to pay for it unlike Plextools =)

I'm not sure about the plextools utility on the px 740A.

You did like a lot of other members did, cross flashed them to the benq 1640.
