I have an older DVD player (3 yrs) that does not read my backups, but a new cheap one from Walmart doesn't have a problem. My burner is a Sony in my HP laptop (DVD+R 2x). I'm only using it to get used to the process and decide if this is what I want to do. In the meantime I'm planning on purchasing an external burner for my desktop PC. My question has two parts? 1. Will booktyping the backup as DVD-ROM help it play in my older player? It's a much higher quality player and I'd like to be able to use it. 2. How will I know if the burner I purchase can booktype to DVD-ROM? Is this listed in the specs?
That should help. I would suggest also using 4X DVD+R discs as most of the newer discs 8X and 16X probably won't be seen by your Sony, No, you won't find it in the specs BUT here's are my suggestions for DVD Burners: 1. Buy one that can change Book type. They are: Ben Q LG Lite-On Nec Nu Tec Plextor and Ricoh 2. Buy a burner that supports dual-format media (DVD +R/RW & DVD-R/ RW media as well as one that supports Dual-layered burning. I almost hate to say that BUT if I didn't put it down, there would be someone who would still be selling a crappy burner able to only burn +R media at 4X. FYI, just in case you didn't know, all DVD burners can burn CD's. 3. Purchase those drives that support LightScribe burning. They are drives capable of "burning" a label on your DVD disc. Soon, around the beginning of this year, LightScribe discs will be able to burn a "silkscreen" quality, colored labels directly on your DVD or CD. Currently, it's available in only gold-tone silkscreen though it still looks cooler than cool D) DL Burners prices range from $35.00 to $70.00 USD). Always buy quality. Quality never goes out of style. Cheers, Pete
Yes... definitely!! By book typing or changing the bitsettings from any DVD+R into DVD-ROM, any of your older dvd player can play it easily. What model is your dvd/Sony burner? Most of Sony's are rebadged of Lite-On, and most of Sony(s) alone can book type easily if you use Nero Burning Rom to burn.
My writer is a SONY DVD+RW DW-P50A. I've got a trail copy of Nero and I'm in Nero Recode, but I can't find anything about booktyping other than looking at the disc info and seeing that it is a DVD+R which I already knew. Where can I find the option to switch it to DVD-ROM?
Though Book-typing is a handy item BUT many, many burners cannot do it. Pioneer's unfortunately, are one brand that cannot. LQQking at DVDD's list of acceptable burners that can do it will give you an idea. Open DVDD, Go to "Tools", Drive then "Change Book types". Don't feel badly iffin' your drive cannot do that little "trick", you have a lot of company.
one thing to add, Pioneer drivers can be modified to booktype dvd+r to dvd-rom ,but its hacked firrmware to get it done
Your sony notebook slimdrive dvdrw is not capable of bitsetting (I don't know of any notebook slimdrives that are capable). My drive of preferance is benq. Best bang for the buck. Bitsetting ready, not finicky about media, very reliable.
FYI, My 1625 is golden, handles everything INCLUDING the new LightScribe HP Label burning (Extremely Kweel Pple are having problems with the 1640 Checkout CdFreaks. They have some threads addressing problems with that unit. 1640 giving me headaches - http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=156398
This is the first I have heard of "booktyping". Will it help me burn a better backup?I am not really having a problem with my back ups and the problems I am having seem to be due to cheap media..I switched to Sony and Verbs and problems about coasters have gone away.Is "booktype to dvd-rom" the new way to burn the back ups?I usually compress my back ups and do not spend the extra cash on those expensive DL DVDs.Can this only be done using DL Media?Should I only worry about booktyping if I use an older machine? I just bought a Panasonic 5 disk changer suround sound and my back ups work fine in it.. Would they work any better if I use this booktype method? I have a sony DVD RW DRU-700A burner and use Any DVD and Clone DVD for back ups..I don't recall seeing anything to change in those programs having to do with "booktyping". Thanks for input, Craig
@CRAIGERR, Most of Sony's are rebadged Lite-On's burner, and yes.. most of them are capable of "Book Typing" or changing the "Bitsettings" to DVD-ROM if you're burning with either DVD Decrypter, Nero Burning Rom, Nero Express and Nero Recode 2 when you're using a DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL media. Other DVD burners does have hacked firmware that will support Book Typing as well. One of the most commonly known is the "Lite-On Book Type Utility" program -- this little program can change any DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL into DVD-ROM if you owned any of the latest Lite-On burners. In reality, DVD-ROM is the "universal" DVD format, it will play in all functional stand alone dvd players. Therefore, it is consider one of the best and safest DVD format to date. As a matter of fact, all original commercial DVDs and PS2 games are pressed as DVD-ROM, therefore any of your DVD players can play them original dvd(s) flawlessly. In addition, any PS2 console system is capable of playing original pressed DVDs beautifully as well.
Hi Craig, If you plan on never playing your DVD's on another standalone player and all your stuff works fine then don't worry about it. Many pple take some of their discs when they go on a trip OR when they go to a friend's house. The simple truth is, A DVD ROM will play on more machines than any other disc. I burn 50% of my stuff as a DVD ROM. I never worry about them ) I wouldn't go buy another burner just for doing Book Type BUT I would consider it if I was shopping for a new burner, for , let's say, a LightScribe burner.
Just to add to alkohols comments, booktyping your backups to dvd-rom will make them compatable with more set top players (especially older ones) than either dvd-r or dvd+r formats. Here's some more info on bitsetting. http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46559 and http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150 Since your drive is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-832S and you are using clone dvd to compress and burn which doesn't allow for booktype setting, I would recommend useing the lite-on booktype utility to set booktype to dvd-rom in the drives eeprom. It will have no effect on dvd-r media and will booktype all dvd+r media to dvd-rom unless you change the setting back to dvd+r instead of dvd-rom. You can only booktype dvd+r media to dvd-rom. It can not be done with dvd-r media. Here is a link to the lite-on booktype utility and there is also a link to a usage guide on the page. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441
Mort81 to booktype with Clonedvd 2 ,open dvd decrypter, booktype your dvd+r media to dvd-rom close out dvd decrypter open up CloneDVD 2 encode ,shrink and burn and your dvd+r media and it will come out as a dvd-rom
aabbccdd, I didn't know if that would work since I don't use clonedvd 2. The lite-on utility will perform the job as well and will store the setting in the drives eeprom. I didn't know if dvdd stored the setting in the eeprom or volitile memory or gives you a choice between the two since I only use the lite-on utility for my lite-on and the benq utility for my benq. I also wasn't sure if the settings in dvdd carry over to other burn utilitys. Personally I prefer to use the utility's provided by the manufactures of the drives eg. lite-on booktype utility, benq booktype utility manager or qsuite, and plextools as opposed to generic utility's eg. dvd decrypter, nero, dvdinfopro, or kprobe. I don't know that it matters but I've always had good luck with the drives own utility.
yes thats the best and easiest way to go for sure set it and forget it ,but some dont have that option so i thought i throw it out there ,good to see you there Mort you been away for awhile or what?
I'm still here. Just been layin low. Same old stuff over n over here. Thought I'd let the rest of you handle things for a while. You can answer anything I can and probably then some. Keep up the good work and put that good lookin brunette (long straight hair) back in your sig once in a while. You know the one you used to have 2 or 3 pics of. Who is she btw?
oh that would be "Adriana Lima" shes really nice huh ,shes one of the top supermodels in the world for Victoria Secert and many others good luck on the bitsetting guys remember its your most compatable format
WOW!! Thanks for the great info guys!! Great link/tutorial Mort81!! So aabbccdd if I just look in decyfer for the lite on and use that on my Sony DVD RW , I could try that before using something that might screw up my firmware and maybe even my DVD burner if I do something wrong? Is this an alternative to using a program to "upgrade" my firmware? Or would I still need to use that utility and then change the booktype settings in Decyfer? Mort81 , Is there a way to "uninstall" this firmware upgrade if I choose that I don't like it? I know it says on some models it reverts back and you have to remember to set it each time, but with my Sony how will I know before I try it.. Ha I know I seem very indecisive about trying this.. I just am not sure I want to "FIX" something that really isn't BUSTED..All my DVDs play on the 3 dvd players in the house and the few people I have loaned my DVD back ups have had no problems playing them other than a few PIXELATED/FREEZING that I have recently solved with just buying some Sony and Verb Media.. Thanks again for the feedback guys!!! It sure is appreciated!! Craig
