Both my DVD and CD drives have suddenly stopped working. There are no negative indications in device manager. I have tried removing both devices in device manager and rebooting, to no avail.

The DVD drive was successfully flashed to a Sony DRU-710A at least a couple of years ago. The CD drive is a Lite-On LTR-52327S.

Both drives have power and appear to spin the media but neither will read the disc. The DVD drive comes up with a “drive not accessible” message. It will not read DVD or CD media.

I have no idea if this is related, but the computer has developed some kind of bug that slows it down. By slows down I mean if I launch a browser, nothing happens…so I launch another and another. Then, after a 10 or 15 second delay…all of the new browsers pop up. While it’s “thinking” I can see the drive being accessed but not aggressively, if that makes any sense. What’s strange is that sometimes after an hour or two, the HD will start being accessed very heavily and then when it stops, for the rest of the day, the “slowness” is gone. But the next day it happens again.

I mention this because I think this problem and the drive problem developed simultaneously.

I went to the MajorGeeks forum and ran through all of their malware tutorials, but was told (sans a couple of minor issues) that malware was not the cause of my problems.

Shorts of bringing someone in here to help me with a total OS reinstall (not something I feel comfortable attempting on my own), I’m at a total loss.

The machine is a homebuilt Athlon 64 with XP Pro SP2.

    Any ideas at all?

    TIA.

Well, I have no idea how I got this figured out (at least one problem), but I got the drives working again.

All I did was swap the master/slave relationship of the DVD and CD drives and rebooted!

Problem solved! I honestly don't know if it was because I changed which drive was master/slave or simply because I had to reseat the IDE cable in the process, but whatever it was, it worked :)
