bought a new hard drive

    my gateway laptop hard drive has broken and ive had to buy another i cant find the disks anywhere can i use any copy of windows xp home edition and then use my legit code on the back of my laptop.

    Maybe, maybe not. There are several versions of XP Home and the copy that you use must MATCH the copy that your product key is for.

    Example

    XP Home SP0
    XP Home SP1
    XP Home SP2

    Are all different product types and the product keys for one may not work on any other.

    There are also 'OEM' and "Retail' versions...the XP Home SP0 sold in stores uses different keys than the version that came pre-installed on computers. You can get all of the 'OEM' versions from microsoft if you are a partner...but if you are a partner, you are better off getting windows 7 anyway.
