I'm looking to buy some more RAM to replace the two 512mbs i've got in at the moment and i was wondering whats the best brand of RAM out there i've done some Googleing but i can't find a straight answer really, but i know you all here will be able to give some good help i can trust on this. So the question is: "whats the best brand of RAM?" Also if you could say a good place to buy memory from in the UK it would be very helpful and appricated P.S. I'm not interested in overclocking.
whats the best is really a personal opinion so what people will say will vary. but i'd say that corsair is probably one the best.
So if i'm not interested in overclocking at all is the brand really that important? Sorry if thats a stupid question... Also whilst i'm here could someone tell me who good/bad a emprex burner is?
Concerning your question about RAM, indeed Corsair and Kingston are top notch, even for people who don't overclock. As for that burner, i'd say none, get a proper brand like LiteOn, NEC or something similar.
Ok, i'll go for some Kingston or Corsair then, could anyone tell me how much you would expect to pay for 1gB of DDR-400 memory from these brands and also where from?
http://www.dabs.com/productview.asp...150,4294960195,4294955846,42670000,4294957152 £49 for 2x512MB Corsair http://www.dabs.com/productview.asp...150,4294960195,4294955846,42670000,4294957152 £62 for 1x1GB Kingston http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Memory.html
Hmm ok, seems to be good prices. One final question: Is 512mb x 2 better/worse/no different than 1gb x 1? Thanks
Normally 2x512MB would be best, as the motherboard can then use dual channel memory access which is faster than operating to a single stick. If your motherboard supports this, then go for the 2x512MB. If you're not sure, just list the motherboard make/model.
ftp://download.intel.com/design/motherbd/ag/C6860002.pdf Item 1.6.1 refers to the dual channel setup of this board
Erm ok i think i got that :S If i were to buy the Corsair 2 x 512mbs ( http://www.dabs.com/productview.asp...50,4294960195,4294955846,42670000,4294957152) (Your sure thats compatable right?) Later i'd be able to buy another 2 x 51mbs or a 1gb stick and fit it? Or does it all have to be same brand model and make?
That memory is fine. You can add the same or different later, just as long as it is also PC3200, otherwise you'll be running at the same speed as the slowest you put in. They have also changed the price on the memory now. Dabs must have made a mistake and altered it to £72 instead of £42. When a bargain like that comes up, it needs to be grabbed asap.
Ok thanks, Typically unlucky for me that the price would go up the morning i would of bought I'll have a look around the web today and see what other prices i can find. Thanks for all your help. EDIT: I've look everywhere i can think of and cannot find cheaper prices anywhere other than eBay that will ship to UK, and they aren't far off it either. Can you offer any other sites to look at?
