Hello everyone. I've have been dealing with a hijacker now for over a month. I have run the following programs with little success: Ad-Aware, Ccleaner, Spyhunter, SpywareBot and Spyware Doctor. I'm running McAfee anti-virus. My symptoms are present in IE, Firefox and Opera. In fact, IE is now unusable. After a reboot, I can address maybe 5 or 6 url's before the hijacker is redirected to ad sites (atdmt, tribalfusion, etc.) The browser never actually reaches the ad site, but instead slows to a crawl and eventually hangs completely. Stopping the browser and reloading the intended page will override the problem for a short time, but the problem worsens each time. I can tell it is attempting to address the ad sites by watching the address bar in Firefox. Here is my HijackThis log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 8:54:14 AM, on 9/9/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\DIGStream\digstream.exe C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\LogMeInSystray.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\McLogCln.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\McLogCln.exe C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\RaMaint.exe C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\LogMeIn.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\HackerWatch\HWAPI.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\mclogsrv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\mcupdmgr.exe c:\program files\common files\mcafee\mna\mcnasvc.exe C:\Palm\HOTSYNC.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcods.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\mcpromgr.exe c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mcafee\redirsvc\redirsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcshield.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcsysmon.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\mctskshd.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\mcusrmgr.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\MPF\MPFSrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdtc.exe C:\NVIDIA\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nSvcIp.exe C:\NVIDIA\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nSvcLog.exe C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\sdhelp.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\snmp.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wdfmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\mqsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\mqtgsvc.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R0 - Run ActiveScan online virus scan: http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm When the scan is finished, save the results from the scan! Come back here and post a new Hijack This log along with the logs from the Panda scans.
You can have an on-line analysis of the log here: http://www.hijackthis.de/ If you have tried all the usual things like Adaware, Spybot and the on-line scans and they don't help, then try the Hijack route. If all fails download 'Winpatrol' and look in the 'IE Helpers' section for odd, unnamed entries. Check the Startup (including 'secret startup') locations and Google the names. I found a BHO called nsg6.dll (that was all, no name) that had been responsible for popping up ads on IE (even when not actively surfing).None of the other apps, including 'Hijackthis' picked up on it. Although it sounds as if your friend has hooked onto all the browsers, you can use Winpatrol to disable entries while you home in on the sob.
@attar i can read the log, thank you. Hijackthis analysers aren't accurate and don't give intructions on what to do next even if they were.
@maca1 This entry was picked up by an on line analyser along with the 'weather bug' and is reckoned to be undesirable. Even those who can read these logs are somtimes found to be fallible, but that notwithstanding,my point (though expressed poorly)is that anyone who has been trying to fight off a problem like this for a month (assuming that a 'system restore' point is out of the question) is beyond the cookie remover stage and since the likes of Adaware and Spywarebot have failed it's time to move on to looking at exactly which apps are running on this PC. In my own hair tearing case non of the Hijack logs nor Adaware or Spybot, nor the on line virus scans, picked out the problem.I had to use a tool to examine each process and program running.A month, for gods sake!
maca1 The panda scans wouldn't work with firefox or opera. I have uninstalled IE. maca1 and attar, First, thanks for your assistance. I removed the other registry entry identified by attar. After a reboot, I surfed uninterrupted for about 15 minutes before a saw Opera redirect to an "spe atdmt" site when downloading an extremely graphic intensive page at ESPN.com. The indicator showed the page had downloaded 95% before the browser hung up. Another symptom (probably unrelated). None of the browsers will address Yahoo.com. They time out every time. Yahoo.com was my home page prior to all of this mess. Thanks again for any help. trouter52
@Attar Do you know that they have online training camps for Hijackthis helping? Have you attended or are apart of any of them? Just wondering, it would come as quite a shock if you were. And if I miss something in a log first time, I'll get it next post. Like I said, Hijackthis anaylsers are no good becuse even if they are accurate and bad things are found, there is a lot more that needs to be done than just check and fix the problem, there are tools that need to be downloaded, there are logs from such tools that need to be analysed also. Even though the Panda scan searches deeply and is the best next step if nothing threatening is found in a HJT log, I never said that if Panda found nothing I was going to just leave it at that did I???? I only made one post, you can't draw a conclusion - How can you just assume that what I might and might not have done next won't fix this problem with malware if any. Ok, attar, you can take over here if you like.
Hi, I'd never touch Online HJT anlysers, poor accueracy, if a fix goes wrong they can't aid you.. Which they tend to do, often, I've been learning @ MRU (malware removal university), theres no need for a online tool to do it for me, espcecially if the online tool is a pile ot garbage. There aren't that many qaulified helpers currently reviewing logs at this site, I think some of them are just self taught..(which can be bad.) I'd advise you not to start using thoose log reviewers, they do a sloppy job :-(
@trouter52 Your Hijackthis log showed your IE home page was the Drudge Report, which you removed. You can get Yahoo back by going to the site and clicking tools >internet options >use current. Don't mind the foofarah raging over HJT logs, it's just excessive testosterone. BTW, was the 'system restore' option out of the question?
attar I know how to reset the home page. None of my browsers can download www.yahoo.com. They all time out. Not so on other computers on my network.
Have you turned off system restore, booted in safe mode (with network support) and ran Adaware, Spybot, etc? Can you surf the net in safe mode? Can you ping Yahoo or other sites from a cmd prompt? Have you looked at the running processes in safe mode and compared them to a normal boot and tried disabling them (Startcop, Winpatrol)?
Download WinPFind http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All" Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop Don’t do anything with it yet! Reboot into Safe Mode. Double click WinPFind.exe Click "Start Scan" It will scan the entire System, so please be patient and let it complete. Reboot back to Normal Mode! Go to the WinPFind folder Locate WinPFind.txt Copy and paste WinPFind.txt in your next post here please
maca1 Sorry to be so late in replying. Work won out over the browser problem. Here is the WinP scan log: WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding. If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows sometimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O.
