Buffer Level Jumping ... External DVD Writer

    Hello everyone, i have an internal AOpen DVD-Rw in a external case that is hooked up to my laptop through the USB port.

    In the last 2 days, my buffer level has been jumping like crazy anywhere from 10% - 90% constantly ... this has drastically reduced the write time of a dvd, and is really starting to annoy me to tell you the truth ... it was fine up until 2 days ago.

    I've read many posts about making the IDE channels DMA and they all are. Now under the IDE controller lab in device manager there is also a Intel (R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller -24CB ... now in nero info tools it says this is where my DVD USB drive is connected.

    I don't know if anyone has any ideas but this would help greatly ... i re-installed nero tons of times and also did an okay job of cleaning out registry ... kind of computer dumb as well but i catch on quickly ... thank you

    The buffer jumping has happened to me several times with my internal DVD burner and CD burners on a couple of machines. What I do to fix it is restore the registry back to before the problem started, then I reinstall the last Nero update I put on. You can use a Restore Point if you have one from before the problem started. Trouble with using System Restore Points is it can also do stuff like uninstall software you just installed. So it's annoying to use. What I do is save the registry with ERUNT freeware. It makes a backup of sections of your registry with a small program to restore from those backups. It works great.

    So every couple of days I make a backup of the registry with ERUNT and
    as they get about 3 weeks old I delete 'em off. Doing a restore from ERUNT and then reinstalling the Nero update I put on last has worked for me to get things back to normal. After you do the Nero update reboot the machine to make sure it loads the new registry entries. It doesn't tell you to reboot but it can make a difference.

    Thanks for the help miles ... do you or anyone else know if there's another way around this problem since this kinda sounds tricky. i don't know how to find a restore point also ...

    going back to Nero for a moment, post LAST section of your Nero log, which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar

    I updated the firmware on my device ... so it works "abit" better now.

    The dvd burn process starts and then the used read buffer empties to around 10% ... slowly but surely it fills up but after it does that the buffer level starts jumping again from 30 - 90%, if the used read buffer didn't empty the buffer level was at 98%.

    - update your burner's firmware - 1.02 is here - http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/5653/AOpen-DUW1616-ARR-Firmware-v-R102

    - yup, update the firmware, the best your burner can tell is that the disc is a +R disc

    - ty burning at 4x

    - try uninstalling Roxio, it doesn't always play well with Nero

    k, thanks for all of the help ... i'm gonna try all of those

    weird thing is that i already deleted roxio from add/remove hardware, is it possible it's still hiding somewhere???

    roxio zapper doesn't work ... it tells me "the burning engine has been detected and may be used by other roxio product(s), press okay to exit"

    updated the firmware, burned at 4x, uninstalled roxio through add/remove programs and still buffer level jumping like crazy !!!!

    creaky, i appreciate all the help ... at any point if you feel like giving up helpin me that's okay too, but if not thank you

    here's my log file for my latest burn .... i changed the firmware back to where it was b/c it seemed to work abit better but still over 1 1/2 hours for a dvd.

    i aborted half way.

    k, i'll do that pronto ... now i just tried burning one and i got an error for the first time

    ps ... the disc is + R that i'm using, i don't understand what else it would need to read from it if i updated the firmware

    yeah, still need to updsate the firmware to version 102..., THEN run a 'simulation burn' thus not wasting a disc (it'll ask for a blank disc and go thru the motions but won't actually write to the disc). post the log entry for that simulation and we'll see what falls out the bottom...

    k, i updated the firmware ... had the wrong version all and all, but turns out it worked better than what is supposed to be there ... i'll do a simulation and post it

    creaky ... it's not letting me run the simulation ... says can't run simulation on disc ... i'm using benq +R 8x ... please don't tell me i have to go and get other ones.

    just checked and your burner can write 16x to both - and +R. hmmmmm, dunno what's going on there...
