Can anyone give any advice with this burn failure? Every time I use shrink/nero it fails. Was working fine up until the other week, now no matter what disc I try it always fails.

    Hi kubus1,

The burning process failed due to a [bold]Power calibration error.[/bold]
This is usually a firmware, hardware (burner) or media related problem.

Lets see if we can resolve this issue:)

    1)Recorder: <MATSHITA DVD-RAM SW-9581>Version: B102

Your burner is using/running the most current firmware available, so no update needed.

    2)Media Specific [16..63]:
    00 60 00 10 20 30 40 50 - 00 00 00 21 00 00 00 00 .`...0@P...!....
    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

    and

    Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)

These two fields indicate that the burner was unable to correctly recognize the DVD media you're using and so unable to correctly write to it. Since there's no firmware update available to help, you could try another brand of disks and see what happens (try verbatim). I suggest you check with the burner's web-site to see if they provide a list compatible/tested media for the burner.

Note: It's also possible you've got a bad batch of disks?

If you keep getting the same error every time, even after trying different media, try cleaning the burner's lens (it may be dirty) by blowing some air in it with the tray opened or using a cleaning disk. If the problem won't go away, it's possible that the burner may be defective and you'll need to replace it with a new one.

Note: you're burning at 2x, this is a bit slow, try 4x or 1/2 the rated speed of the media.

    Cheers,
    John.

Hi John thanks for replying. The discs I have are Maxwell ones and I have used them for ages and had no problems. Even though I did try verbatim and still got the same error. It is saving the files on the hard drive but I cant seem to burn with anything. Will try cleaning the burner and let you know if any changes. Also 2x seems to be the fasted I can burn in the settings.

Your burner's firmware hasn't been updated since November of 2004, this is not a good thing since media characteristics change over the years and so firmware updates are needed to keep pace with the changes. Your burner is only able to write to -R media which limits its options, and 2x maybe the fastest it is able to write. What I'm saying is that the burner is a bit dated, if you can't get it to write/burn properly again trying different media and/or cleaning the lens (try using a cleaning disk), it's time to upgrade, lots of new burners out there that will do a much better job and a whole lot faster than 2x.

Checkout bestbuy, circuitcity, or compusa for deals on burners. I own three: Plextor PX-716A and 712A, sony dru-830A which are great drives and work well.
