I'm having trouble burning any video to disc. was working fine a couple weeks ago. burned some video to dvd-rw (maxell) had no problems, burned some other video to dvd-r(maxell and verbatim). then tried to burn to dvd-r(verbatim 16X) and got burn process failed, blew through three discs(coasters) I'm stopping to hopefully get to the bottom of this. I tried burning three different "movies" the last one was a very small file. I was hoping maybe I wasn't compressing small enough but, not the case, that one failed as well. I have the log from all three and I'll paste it below, hopefully someone in here can help. question: how far back will nero keep a log history? mine seems to only go back 2 days. here are the logs ====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ====== Michael Hanson Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.0.0, size=17920 bytes, created 1/31/2005 4:05:30 PM ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 11/2/2004 1:54:32 PM NT-SPTI used Nero Version: 6.6.1.4 Internal Version: 6, 6, 1, 4d Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4040B>Version: A112 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.6.1.4 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? Nero 6.6.1.4 This version of Nero contains some bugs, uninstall, run this clean tool http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/Clean_Tools.html and then install this more stable version, BOTH packages http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe Package 2 http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe
Hi militantm Part of the burn problems is the 16x verbatim's. Great discs but problem is you have an older drive (max burn speed 4x) that may not support them (newer 16x media). There is a firmware update for your drive that may help from 9/05 - A114. Here's a link: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1628 Then you have these errors: KEY_UNIT_ATTENTION & Reset occurred So update the firmware and see how that goes. If Nero fails after the firmware update then use this great free burning program ImgBurn If the files aren't already an ISO for imgburn to burn then use the build mode. Here's a guide you that: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/383878 Oh and the nero log - I think it will only keep the last burn l0 logs no matter what the outcome. Give this a go and let us know!
thank you for your suggestions. I wasn't aware there was firmware update for my drive. I thought I had come across one before but, I wasn't confident about applying it. I'll try everything you guys have suggested including the nero roll back. here's the deal, I have had successful burns with this version of nero before that's why I'm confussed. I did take the 16X verbatim thing into consderation before purchasing them but I figured I would just go for it. I did go back and attempt a burn with the maxell dvd-rw I was using with success before but it failed as well, which leads me to believe that it could be one of the factors you guys have suggested. I'll post the log from the maxell dvd-rw and let you guys have a look, can't do that from this computer though. thanks again.
Ok post the new log from Nero when you can. Give ImgBurn a shot too . It will also give you a log. B/4 you begin just press 'L'. You can post that one 2 if it fails. Oh nad you're welcome!
which version of imageburn? and which nero clean tool? there were several, I know it's not the nero5 cleaner so, scratch that off the list. I used the general cleaner, the one that didn't require install into the ahead folder. then I installed the version of nero you guys suggested and so far I've got two with no failure messages and that's on the 16x verbatim without the firmware update. I have to say I'm still sketchy on the firmware thing. I've read that if the device is working properly don't mess with the firmware because once you attmept an update and it's the wrong one, there's the possibility of rendering the drive useless. I've searched for and found the firmware update that was suggested here before, but it's not clear whether the dvd burners in the sony vaios are LG or not, everything seems to line up but, it's just not for certain. if you guys could point me to someone who's had success with that update I would appreciate it.
Hi militantm From what I can tell the drive in the Sony is an oem LG drive. The W in GWA for LG's tells you it's an oem drive so Sony supports it usually - LG usually won't. The firmware - yes can be a little risky but one thing it does it keep the drive up to date w/ media codes to use the correct write startegy and fully recognize them. Otherwise it will use a generic write pattern which may or may work. I don't have the same drive but I keep all mine up to date and have minimal if any problems. Since it's an older drive w/ no recent update the firmware update may or may not help. I don't know which media codes are in the last update. So 16x media may still be hit or miss. For ImgBurn use the latest version 2.1.0.0. Hope this helps
so If I encounter more burn errors in the future, maybe the it would be my best bet to go ahead and try the fw update? would it be safe? I don't understand how come the recent version of nero was working properly, then not all if sudden. I thought for sure it was some defragment issue so I was staying on top of defragmenting even when it said it wasn't necessary. there was another nero update in between the version I was using and the one you guys suggested I roll back too, it worked fine too.
If you do run into more burn failures imho I would update it. You might also want to try Sony's site for the firmware update to increase your comfort level. I haven't had a problem with a firmware update. Just keep the power on (don't do during a thuderstorm , no discs in drive and no programs running. Takes only a few minutes. I think your issue is more the 16x media that what version of Nero you are using. You drive more than likely doesn't have the proper write strategy so it's using a generic one. It may work - and hopefully you'll have more successes than failures. For the defrag I would do them weekly. Throw in a disc cleanup, antivirus, spyware scans and a good registry cleaner too to help the pc run smooth.
