I have a Lite-on DVD rw LDW-411S, I have learned how to back up my DVD's with the help of people on this site, but now my drive is having problems recognizing anything I put in it? I can put a blank DVD, or CD in it, to try to copy something on it, and it says I have no blank DVD or CD in the drive. The light comes on, like it is reading it, then it goes off, and nothing. I am assuming I have to replace the drive, but I need to know with what type of equipment. I have a small tower, around the size of a VCR, so I wondered if there are only certain types I can get for it or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

first I would try to reboot the computer and try again. Then if that doesn't work I would go to Device Manager and uninstall and then install and reboot the computer. Windows will automatically recognize the drive and reinstall the drive when you reboot. Or something that is easy is to try different disks. You might need a firmware update to recognize your disk. there are many variables. good luck

    hmaurice,
What software says that you have no blank DVD or CD in the drive?

Ihoe, has given you some sound advice, but let me elaborate, go to Device Mangager, then select the + sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, then double-click on Secondary IDE Channel, then select the driver tab on the top, and then select uninstall. Select ok, and re-boot.

    HTH,

    Rich

I bought a new spindle of Blank DVD's they are memorex dvd-r 8x 4.7gb, I have used the brand before, and the speed, not quite sure bout the + and - thing, I know I usually get the one with the + sign, but I was told it makes no difference. I have been in the process of backing up all of my dvd's, and was doing just fine, until I used these. It will start the burn process on DVD Shrink, and a few seconds into it actuall burning, the blank disc pops out, and I get the following error message..........

For one thing your drive doesn't recognise the dvd media. Get better media and upgrade the firmware. There are a few tricks you can do to upgrade that drive.

Can you tell me what the few tricks you are talking about are? What kind of software would you suggest?

firstly you got lucky with your memorex media. most including me don't recommend memorex because they buy their media from various manufactures mostly bad and you never know what you're going to get.

I'm guessing your firmware is out dated since the media isn't being recognized and your drive is several years old. If you have dvd decrypter open it. If you don't dl it here http://mrbass.org/dvdrip/ click on tools then click on drive then click on check for firmware updates. it will tell you your current firmware version and take you to a page with the latest firmware update for your drive. DL the latest version and then flash your drive following all directions carefully. mainly remove any media from the drive and do not power down during the flash. very simple really. BTW the current f/w for your drive is FSOK.

i think one of the tricks johnyd was refering to is crossflashing your drive with LDW-811S f/w making it capable of burning at 8x. we won't cross that bridge yet.

So,can you please recomend some good blank media please? I updated firmware before, and tried again, it told me that there was no more updates for it. I have DVD decrypter, but not sure how to use it. You see I had tried and failed for about a year to burn a DVD, then got on here, and someone walked me through it, with success, since then I have been able to backup my DVDs with DVD Shrink, and most of the time they work. I am not a tech genious, I am not too bad, but some things I have a hard time following. Like I said I had 16x's Memorex, and they all worked, so I bought a bigger spindle this time of memorex 8x's the only difference was the + and - on it. PLease hlpe, thank you!

I went and got more media, by Sony, I put another DVD in, finished with DVD Shrink, said burn process started, like normal, and then a minute later the same error popped up and it spit disc out. I only know how to use Shrink, not Decrypter, I am at my wits end, now I have tons of software, and nothing to do with it. Please help me!

You never did answer Mort's question, concerning what firmware are you currently running? BTW, that log hmaurice posted indicated he was using RITEKG - 05, which are normally pretty good discs, in fact, that is what I used to use without failures.

hmaurice, I think the problem is with your burner, and it could be that you just need the latest firmware update.

    Best of luck,

    Rich

I am not sure how to tell you what firmware I have, where would I find that information, I know I have "flashed" the drive to update it, and it was working well, I will tell you whatever you want to know, just tell me where to find the info, and what to look for!

Also, from what I understand from others, my DVD r/rw drive is a bit out dated. Is there any brands, with model #'s that you can recommend to me I was thinking maybe about getting an external, unless internals are better???

    hmaurice,

this is from a post i made previously in this thread that tells you how to determine what f/w you currently have and also what the latest f/w is that is available for your drive.

The power calibration error could be a result of outdated f/w or poor quality media. I doubt it's the media since you have tried ritek G05's and sony's.

I would stay with an internal drive unless you do not have an open bay. I still believe we can get your drive up n burning.

Mort81, I did as you said in Decrypter, it said I had FSOK I then went to update it it read....Your drive's frimware is already the most updated do you wish to continue, I pushed yes....It then updated from FSOK to FSOK....I did this same precedure not too long ago, which is why it was already updated. Anyways, I am going to try to backup a DVD again, I hope it works this time!

sounds like your drive has the most current f/w. what speed are you burning at? also use dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and tell us the manufactures and id's of your medias. give us the log of your last burn attempt.
