yes, you need a dvd burner(any kind will do). to copy games to your hd you need to load evolution dashboard to your hd after you install your modchip.

evolution dashboard will allow you to copy games to your hard drive. the problem is you'll have to install a bigger hd as well, which will put you back around $100.

your best bet is to go with the matrix modchip (its the solderless one) nad just back your games to some type of dvd-+r media.

yes the matrix is pretty easy to install. if you get a bigger harddrive and the matrix chip, you can actually install games to the hard drive of the xbox and play from there, which solves the issue of not having a dvd burner. if you put in an 80gb drive, you can save around 40-45 games to it, depending on the size of the games (they tend to average 1.2-3gb each ,some more, some less).

yeah, you don't need a dvd burner to back up games. A 80-120 gig hard drive should do you just fine, plus its much cheaper than dvd burner. When i was new to this xbox backup stuff, i thought a dvd burner was nessesary and went out to buy a $350 sony one, now after i got a hdd upgrade it just sits there doing nothing. I kinda regret buying it (I coulda bought a more games with that loot). But then again, i can use it in case something happens, not that it will but expext the unexpected.

I plan on doing both. I'm going to upgrade my HDD to 120 gig for media such as movies and my mp3's, but burn all my games to DVD-R. If you do in fact go with a HDD, make sure it's a reputable brand, I've read too many posts about HDD's going down the crapper and people having to start all over.

i read somewhere that if your box reads too much backups your dvd drive's lens wears out faster.
