Burning a film to watch it dvd player

    Help an amateur plz, ive just bought some Verbatim DVD+RW media and want to use nero to burn a film (avi file) to be able to play it in my dvd player. Dont laugh.. do i have to convert the avi file to dvd first and if so using nero 7 what options do i burn it under.
    As usual all replies much appreciated
